A large yacht caught fire in Reinfeld, west of Lübeck, on Saturday afternoon. The boat was parked in an industrial estate next to a warehouse. To prevent the flames from spreading to the building, the fire brigade used an extremely rigid extinguishing procedure.

No fewer than 96 firefighters from Reinfeld, Stubbendorf, Bad Oldesloe and Lübeck were called to the scene of the accident. The danger that the burning yacht could trigger a major fire in the industrial estate prompted the operations centre to play it safe. When the fire brigade arrived, the flames were already threatening to spread to the warehouse. The building was then cooled with extinguishing water.

Firefighting with on-board equipment:

Other firefighters began fighting the fire on the ship at the same time. However, this proved to be difficult. It was no longer possible to enter the yacht due to the smoke and heat. As a precaution, a message was sent via the Mowas emergency response system to warn residents in the immediate vicinity.

Holes torn in the hull to fight the fire

The Lübeck fire brigade finally arrived with a Cobra extinguishing system. This made it possible to cut holes in the hull so that the source of the fire inside the ship could be targeted with extinguishing water and finally smothered. As if that wasn't enough, the ship was then completely torn down with the help of an excavator in order to extinguish any remaining embers.

After almost seven hours of operation, the fire brigades were able to leave and the police began their investigations. Nothing is yet known about the cause of the fire.
