All theory is grey. If you want to steer a motorboat with confidence, the best place to practise is where it counts: on board. Together with our partners Boats Polchthe Boat school OnWater and Pantaenius we are therefore once again inviting our readers to take part in boat driving training. The next one will take place in Mallorca in April. In July, we will then head to the Moselle to practise. And in October, the Mediterranean island is once again on the programme as a training location.
Intensive days on the water await the participants. They will be sailing the latest models from Axopar and Nimbus - ideal conditions for familiarising themselves with different boat types and drive concepts and learning how to handle them. The syllabus includes mooring and casting off manoeuvres in different wind conditions, precise straight-ahead and turning manoeuvres and controlled sailing at higher speeds as well as in waves or on the Moselle in the river current.
Anchoring is also on the course programme: How do you recognise a safe spot, how do you deploy the anchor gear correctly and what options are there for checking and monitoring the anchor's hold? Night sailing is always a special experience during the training courses off Mallorca. From the water, the participants have a fantastic view of the city and the impressively illuminated Palma Cathedral. However, this also makes it clear how challenging navigation can be in the dark. Brightly lit stretches of coastline make it considerably more difficult to recognise and identify sea marks. Modern navigation technology such as AIS, radar or night vision cameras can help here - provided the skipper knows how to use them. Participants can test such systems realistically on the boats used for the sailing training, which are available at Port Calanova.
Various safety and special manoeuvres are also part of the boat driving training. The course concludes with a joint practice trip where everyone can apply and consolidate their newly acquired skills.
