Soon to be permitted: Modern petrol inboard engines with catalytic converters - if they are standard engines.
Until now, there have been strict regulations at Lake Constance when it comes to engines: but now series inboard engines (petrol engines) with catalytic converters will probably soon be permitted.

As a reminder: "Anyone wishing to register a boat on Lake Constance after 1 January 1996 must have an engine that complies with BSO emission level 2." An exception applies to outboards: engines up to 74 kW (100 hp) only have to comply with BSO Stage 1, and BSO Stage 2 has so far only been met by some diesel engines and petrol inboards that have been converted by professionals in the region.

New standards in the USA prompted the two major manufacturers MerCruiser and Volvo Penta to equip their petrol engines with catalytic converters around four years ago. The result is the so-called "4Star Carb engines". Since the end of 2012, manufacturers have been able to apply for Lake Constance approval for these with their own measured exhaust emissions (test cycle E4 according to ISO 8178-7). Which models meet these special standards will be announced at Boot in Düsseldorf.

Deputy Editor in Chief BOOTE

Ralf Marquard discovered his enthusiasm for boating on the tranquil Aller, first with inflatable boats and later with a 6-meter cabin cruiser. His electrical engineering studies at HAW Hamburg took him from the southern Heidekreis (Lower Saxony) to the Hanseatic city. Ralf Marquard has been working for the BOOTE editorial team since 1997, where he trained as a test editor. He tests both small inflatable boats and larger yachts. His personal boat is a 4.50 meter long, self-built wooden boat with a 50 hp outboard motor. In 2007, he was appointed deputy editor-in-chief at BOOTE.
