Old boating licences can now be converted to the new ID1 card format. Sea and inland waterway licences are shown on the same card.

TheMerging the recreational craft licence regulations for sea and inland waterways (see Article from BOOTE 7/2017) has paved the way for the introduction of the recreational craft licence in cheque card format.

When the new recreational craft licence ordinance was passed at the beginning of May 2017 (BGBl I. p. 1016), it was already taken into account "that a certain lead time is required for the production of the driving licence card at the Federal Printing Office and that it cannot be guaranteed that a driving licence card can be produced smoothly by the time this ordinance comes into force".

As a result, the recreational craft licences for sea and inland waterways were issued until 31 December 2017 in accordance with the version of the regulations valid until 10 May 2017.

But now the new card is hereand candidates whosince 1 January of this year have successfully passed a recreational boating licence examination will normally receive their licence in the so-called ID1 card format according to ISO standard 7810directly from the Bundesdruckerei.

Regardless of whether they are sea or inland or whether they have both qualifications:It always remains with this one card. This is because, similar to the motor vehicle driving licence, the area of validity and drive type of the successfully passed driving licence tests are shown on the front of the card under number 10 in English abbreviations.

So it says"IW" for Inland Waters (inland waterways), "CW" for Coastal Waters (maritime waterways), "M" for Motorised Craft (propulsion engine) and "S" for Sailing Craft (sail).

The fact that the abbreviations were taken from the English language makes sense because the German recreational craft licence falls under Resolution N° 40 of the Working Party on Inland Navigation for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), which has been signed by 22 UNECE member states to date and which thus officially constitutes the "International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft" recognise as proof of qualification.

How do you like this article?

The form of the German recreational craft licence is characterised by a relatively short lifespan. New documents for the same content have been issued time and again. If you wanted to keep up to date, you had to spend a lot of money on the necessary changes.

That's the case again this time:The paraphrase from recreational craft licences issued before 31.12.2017 to the new chart licencecosts €33.89.

Applications for re-registration can be downloaded from the website of the German Motor Yacht Association: www.dmyv.de/downloads/fuehrerschein/ and the German Sailing Association: https://www.dsv.org/ausbildung/antraege/

It is pleasing that holders of the recreational boating licences for sea and inland waterways only need to have one document on their person after transferring to the chart licence, which is alsoin the card compartment of the wallet fits.

Less pleasing is the fact that the new licence does not offer the possibility to use theCertificates of competence and/or expertise for distress signalling equipmentinto the new format. The DMYV states that "the certificate of competence (...) may no longer be tested and issued by the associations for several years".

However, for the licence confirmed in an old pleasure craft licenceProof of expertise (FKN) is issued a separate document upon request. And this is available at the "bargain price" of 19,26 € to have.

The new March issue of BOOTE! will be published on 21 February. Earlier for subscribers, of course!
