Focus Motor Yachts builds the 5X as a customised sports motor yacht with a length of 16.50 metres. The special feature: the shipyard from the Netherlands builds each yacht individually according to the customer's wishes. The extra list is therefore very short.

The Focus 5X is a sports motor yacht that combines two concepts. With the windows closed, it offers the protection of a hardtop yacht; with the windows open, it becomes an open cruiser. This transformation is achieved by hydraulic side windows in the hardtop, which can be lowered completely. There is also a large panoramic glass roof that slides to the side electrically at the touch of a button. Both systems together create a feeling of space that alternates between complete weather protection and open-top driving.

Deck of the Focus 5X with multiple faces

The aft deck can be converted as required. The sun lounger there has a sliding backrest. If you push it forwards, a larger sunbathing area is created. If you push it back, the area around the table becomes a seating area. In the bow, the sun lounger also transforms: a table moves up electrically from the centre and turns the lounging area into a lounge. The side decks extend all the way to the stern, creating additional space for moving around and sitting.

Bathing platform with garage function

The hydraulic bathing platform at the stern raises 70 centimetres or lowers 90 centimetres into the water. It can carry up to 450 kilograms. When it is lowered, a door opens to the dinghy garage under the aft deck. The dinghy can then be lowered directly into the water. Focus recommends the Williams TurboJet 285 for this, as the platform also serves as access to the shore, a bathing ladder and a tender handling system.

A continuous rubber fender runs along the entire length of the hull. It is integrated into the mould and does not interrupt the lines. It protects the outer skin when docking and during tight manoeuvres. All surfaces with Awlgrip paintwork are laminated with vinyl ester resin. According to the manufacturer, this increases resistance to osmosis and preserves the colour and surface over the long term.

Two engine variants with different characters

The Focus 5X can be ordered with two different drive systems. Variant one: two MAN i6-850 with 625 kilowatts (850 hp) each and classic shaft drives. According to the shipyard, this allows the yacht to reach a cruising speed of 26 to 30 knots and a top speed of 36 to 40 knots. Fuel consumption at cruising speed is around 200 to 235 litres per hour, and 310 to 340 litres at full throttle. The range is around 250 to 340 nautical miles.

Variant two: two Volvo Penta D11 IPS 950 with 533 kilowatts (725 hp) each and pod drives. The pods are located under the hull and can be steered individually. According to the manufacturer, this should enable the yacht to reach a cruising speed of 25 to 29 knots and a top speed of 33 to 37 knots. Fuel consumption is reduced to 180 to 205 litres at cruising speed and 265 to 285 litres at full throttle. The range increases to 275 to 360 nautical miles. The IPS version comes with a joystick system for manoeuvring and an optional Dynamic Positioning System. It runs more quietly and vibrates less, but requires more maintenance on the pods and is more susceptible to grounding.

Stabilisation and dual systems

Focus installs the Humphree Active Trim & Stabilisation System as standard. It automatically trims the yacht for optimum speed and efficiency, compensates for list caused by uneven loading or crosswinds and reduces heeling when cornering. The system works with high-speed interceptors and digital control. In addition, important components are installed twice, such as two air conditioning systems with a total output of 32,000 BTU. According to the shipyard, this should increase reliability and prevent breakdowns.

Interior with more height

The Focus 5X is custom-built and can be customised in terms of dimensions. The headroom in the interior and cockpit is at least 2.15 metres, with a 2.25 metre-long bed in the owner's cabin. The owner's cabin extends across the full width of the hull. There are two layout variants: one with two cabins or one with three cabins. There are also three bathrooms, one of which has a separate shower. Panoramic windows in the hull bring daylight inside. The furniture is integrated into the hull and, according to the manufacturer, further reinforces the structure.

Customisation of the Focus 5X as standard

Every Focus 5X is customised. You can choose the exterior colour in Awlgrip, the type of wood and tinting in the interior, the type of deck covering (real teak or Flexiteek in various colours), the upholstery materials and the finishes of all metal elements such as railings and fittings. The process begins with a design meeting in which the most important points are determined. This is followed by a longer phase in which details are refined. These customisations are not an extra charge, but part of the construction process. The list of extras comprises just 16 points.

Navigation and equipment

The standard equipment includes three Garmin screens: two 16-inch and one 15-inch in ultrawide format. There is also a Simrad NAIS 500 VHF radio with AIS and antenna, an autopilot, a camera system for manoeuvring and a remote control for the anchor, bow thruster and bathing platform. An inverter, four underwater LED lights at the stern and a JL audio system with ten loudspeakers and two subwoofers are also installed. A 6 kVA diesel generator from WhisperPower (Piccolo 6 model) is also part of the standard equipment, as are bow and stern thrusters from Vetus.

Options and water toys for the Focus 5X

For an extra charge, there is a more powerful generator with 15 kVA, a water treatment system (Schenker Smart 100), a gyro stabiliser, an additional 16.000 BTU air conditioning system for the cockpit, a Garmin 360-degree camera system, a Syonix night vision camera, a Garmin radar, more underwater LEDs (five at the stern plus two on each side), an upgrade of the audio system to the JL Audio Signature series with 16 speakers and a Starlink internet antenna. For water sports, an integrated jet ski holder, a Williams TurboJet 285 dinghy, an Awake Rävik S E-Foil board with charging station and a Seabob F5 S with charging station can be installed.

Hull and construction

The hull has a deep V-shape and is laminated by hand from glass fibre. According to the shipyard, a closed-cell core is intended to increase rigidity and impact resistance. Structural bulkheads and furniture elements are integrated into the hull and reinforce the construction through the layout itself. The yacht will be tested at sea before delivery. It is CE-certified in category B, i.e. for sailing up to wind force 8 and wave heights of up to four metres.

Ole Puls was born in Schleswig in 1999. He quickly swapped the football pitch for the Schlei and grew up sailing a wide variety of dinghies and tall ships. From his grandfather's self-built wooden opti and a Europe to a 49er and an X362 Sport, there was a lot to choose from. After leaving school, Puls decided to train as a boat builder at the high-tech shipyard Knierim Yachtbau in Kiel in 2016. He successfully completed his training in 2020 and stayed at the shipyard as a bachelor. In 2022, he decided not only to build boats, but also to test them. Since then, he has been working for Delius Klasing Verlag in the Test & Technology section of BOOTE magazine. The training he received and the eye for detail and quality of workmanship he acquired help him immensely today. Even though he is a regatta sailor with heart and soul, he feels right at home on motorboats and enjoys separating his professional and private lives and yet combining them. Because we all know one thing: there is simply no better place to be than on the water.
