For "Zattera", Renzo Piano once again worked with Nauta Design. Piano already realised his last sailing yacht with the Milan studio. He developed his first motorised format with and for Olav Selvaag, scion of a Norwegian building dynasty.
Designer Francesco Rogantin sent the plans for a raft-like, 7.20 metre wide wooden yacht to the Castagnola shipyard in Lavagna, which accelerates up to twelve knots with a hybrid drive from Siemens Energy. The propulsion package consists of two variable-speed diesel generators, each with an output of 180 kilowatts, two 135-kilowatt electric motors and a battery bank with a capacity of 95 kilowatt hours.
In addition to efficiency, the owner was particularly interested in quiet travelling. The interior cork panelling was designed by the Munich-based firm Müller-BBM, which normally treats concert halls acoustically. And it is no coincidence that the masts are reminiscent of sailing; the Selvaags own Renzo Piano's ex-yacht "Kirribilli I".
