The Damen shipyard presented the 87 metre long Explorer, the result of a conversion, for the first time in Gorinchem in the Netherlands.

"OceanXplorer" has a volume of around 4,400 gross tonnes and, with its high freeboard, seems to be a match for any sea. The ship was built back in 2010 by the Spanish Freire shipyard and has now been converted by Damen for two years for the US billionaire Ray Dalio and his son Mark. The brief was to develop the "world's best platform for scientists and media professionals". Among other things, the "OceanXplorer", redesigned by Gresham Yacht Design, has three submarines as tenders, a helicopter hangar, a diving centre, two 40-tonne cranes and storage space for several containers on deck. The first project will be a trip to the Indian Ocean, where Hollywood director James Cameron will be filming a series of nature reports for the BBC.
