Bayliner is launching two new bowriders in the V22 series, which replace the previous VR6 model. Manufactured in Tennessee, the boats can accommodate up to twelve people and are available now. With a wider design and more storage space, the series is aimed at families in the 21- to 23-foot segment.

Bayliner’s V22 series comprises two models: the V22 with an outboard motor and the V22I with a Z-drive (sterndrive). Both boats replace the VR6 series, of which over 4,000 units have been sold over the past ten years. Production takes place at the Knoxville plant in the US state of Tennessee.

Fuselage and dimensions

Both models are 22.5 feet long, which is equivalent to 6.86 metres. They are 2.56 metres wide, making them wider than the previous model. The hull has a deadrise of 20 degrees, which is intended to improve stability in rough seas.

The kerb weight of the V22 is 1,692 kilograms with the standard engine. Together with the trailer, this gives a total weight of 2,100 kilograms. The fuel tank holds 45 gallons, equivalent to 170 litres of fuel.

Cockpit and seating arrangement

The V22’s cockpit can accommodate up to twelve people, whilst the V22I can accommodate eleven. The maximum passenger weight is 816 kilograms. The seating area consists of an L-shaped upholstered bench on the starboard side. At the helm, there are two bucket seats that can be rotated through 180 degrees. This feature allows the driver and front passenger to turn towards the seating area.

There is a built-in cool box beneath the helm seat. Further storage spaces are located in the floor, under the seats and in the bow. The V22 also features a sun lounger at the stern, beneath which there is a large storage compartment for water sports equipment. Eight cup holders are distributed around the cockpit. There are three points where mobile phones can be charged: at the helm, on the starboard side and in the bow.

Drive and Motorisation

The V22 is powered by an outboard engine with a maximum output of 225 PS. The V22I features a Z-drive with up to 250 PS. Both variants use a hydraulic steering system. The engine control unit is mounted on the side, whilst the trim switch is located on the control lever. An analogue trim indicator shows the position of the trim tabs.

The steering wheel is tilt-adjustable. Standard equipment includes instruments with anti-fog glass showing fuel level, speed, engine speed and battery voltage. A 12-volt socket and a horn are fitted at the helm.

Facilities and Technology

The boats have a self-draining cockpit floor that automatically drains any water that gets in. Three interior lights provide illumination in the dark.

The windscreen consists of a sports canopy with a centre section that can be opened. At the stern there is a swimming platform with a retractable ladder. Four mooring bollards allow the boat to be moored. Six grab handles provide support whilst underway. There is a storage compartment in the floor for skis and wakeboards. A glove compartment holds smaller items.

The stereo system has an output of 120 watts, with four speakers, and receives AM and FM stations.

Optional packages

Buyers can choose from a range of equipment packages. The Bimini package includes a sun canopy. The Comfort package offers additional upholstery. The Tech package includes extra electronic equipment. The Tower package includes a wakeboard tower for water sports.

A digital depth sounder, a second battery with a switch and an upgraded Rockford Fosgate sound system can be ordered separately. Simrad offers digital displays in seven- or nine-inch sizes. Painted or galvanised tandem-axle trailers with brakes are available for transport.

Engines and accessories

Bayliner lists Mercury outboard engines with 150, 175, 200 and 225 PS as engine options. The 200 and 225 PS versions are available in black. Engine accessories include a water separator with a fuel filter and special propellers for high altitudes.

For the floor, the manufacturer offers Gatorstep flooring in grey or beige. This non-slip surface is designed to improve safety on board.

Colour selection

There are nine different hull colours to choose from. Buyers can choose between single-colour hulls in black, blue, grey, Impulse Blue or white. Alternatively, two-tone versions are available: black, blue, grey or Impulse Blue sides with a white underwater hull. For the interior, there are two upholstery colours: Coastline in beige and Graphite in grey.

Ole Puls was born in Schleswig in 1999. He quickly swapped the football pitch for the Schlei and grew up sailing a wide variety of dinghies and tall ships. From his grandfather's self-built wooden opti and a Europe to a 49er and an X362 Sport, there was a lot to choose from. After leaving school, Puls decided to train as a boat builder at the high-tech shipyard Knierim Yachtbau in Kiel in 2016. He successfully completed his training in 2020 and stayed at the shipyard as a bachelor. In 2022, he decided not only to build boats, but also to test them. Since then, he has been working for Delius Klasing Verlag in the Test & Technology section of BOOTE magazine. The training he received and the eye for detail and quality of workmanship he acquired help him immensely today. Even though he is a regatta sailor with heart and soul, he feels right at home on motorboats and enjoys separating his professional and private lives and yet combining them. Because we all know one thing: there is simply no better place to be than on the water.
