Better than ever: Öchsner's well trailerable and popular entry-level model has been given a facelift

Many shipyards build boats that can somehow be transported by land. However, hardly anyone develops boats for trailer transport as consciously as the company Öchsner in Kürnach, Lower Franconia. Because for those whose nearest holiday destinations are the Baltic Sea or Adriatic at least 600 or 800 kilometres away, they learn to appreciate it when a boat is not only good on the water. With this in mind, the Öchsner boats are all designed as "long-distance" yachts: for long journeys to dream holiday destinations.

With its manageable purchase price and a trailer weight of 1500 to 1700 kilograms, the entry-level Öchsner 20 Yachtline model has been particularly popular for many years with young families and skippers with mid-range cars who do not want to have a heavy SUV on hand for distant summer holidays. The high-quality, hand-built hulls come from Drago in Greece and are built at Öchsner with great attention to detail. The shipyard is constantly striving to further optimise its highly sophisticated boats. For example, the 20 Yachtline was fitted with a "wide beam" hull a few years ago, which gives the weekender even better swimming stability, improves acceleration behaviour and also saves fuel.

With the new SX20 Yachtline model series, the Öchsner team has redesigned the Evergreen once again. Instead of the previously rectangular hatch on the foredeck, the boat has been given a hatch that has been significantly extended lengthways, which not only brings significantly more light into the foredeck, but is also suitable for climbing through to the same. The small cabin, which is already a space miracle with its separate toilet room and small kitchenette, has also been fitted with comfortable back cushions.

In the cockpit, the seats are the biggest innovation of the SX20, as they have a slightly protruding seat cushion with rear ventilation, which contributes greatly to seating comfort in warm waters. A new, height-adjustable steering wheel allows optimum handling of the boat when seated or standing. The new 7-inch Garmin plotter is clearly laid out, easy to operate and can be connected to a smartphone via WiFi.

Öchsner-Boote offers the SX20 Yachtline with three Honda outboard engines with between 60 and 100 hp. Our test boat is equipped with a BF100A, which gives the boat excellent motorisation. The high steering seats give the skipper a good overview while travelling. The course stability is remarkable, regardless of whether the boat is travelling slowly or planing - certainly thanks to the wide beam. The lowest planing speed is reached at 3500 rpm, optimum planing speed at 4000 rpm and 17.4 knots. The SX20 is also most economical in this range and can travel a good 130 nautical miles with its 140 litres in the tank (minus 15 percent reserve). At 5700 rpm, we can measure a top speed of 28.3 knots, slightly trimmed. The handling is extremely good-natured even during fast manoeuvres. However, the engine should then be trimmed all the way to the transom, otherwise the propeller will quickly draw air. With the trim down, even very tight turns at 17 knots are possible without any problems. In a slalom, the boat behaves excellently even in cruising trim, occasionally slipping slightly aft but immediately recovering. When jumping over the stern waves of other boats, the SX20 Yachtline starts very smoothly and will therefore also behave well in rough water.
