US style: The Crownline 195 SS is a bowrider in the true sense of the word. We drove the almost 6 m long boat with a V-6 petrol engine.

Going for a swim or exploring, pursuing sporting activities such as waterskiing and tubing - our test boat, the Crownline 195 SS, is good for everything. The excursion areas can be inland and in coastal waters (CE category C), and if you don't want to change areas on your own keel, you can do this with a 2.2 tonne trailer and a luxury car, van, SUV or off-road vehicle.

Our test boat is powered on the water by a 4.3-litre MPI petrol engine from Mercury/MerCruiser with 220 hp. It gets the Crownline (Z-drive down) planing in no time at all with only a slight bow lift and accelerates it to a sporty 45 knots. It must be clear to the full-throttle pilot that almost 60 l/h of petrol are running through the fuel line in this situation.

Consumption is also in the same league when water skiing. You glide economically at 2500 rpm (a good 18 knots) and a consumption of around 20 l/h or, in other words, 1.10 l/sm, which together with the 94-litre tank minus 15% reserve results in an acceptable range of 73 nm.

The Crownline tracks true over the entire glide range and is brought into the optimum position with the power trim system. During slalom manoeuvres and when the steering is twisted, the fuselage follows the steering without any problems. In fast, tight turns and gyrations, the Z-drive should be trimmed all the way to the transom so that the propeller does not draw air.

Ralf Marquard discovered his enthusiasm for boating on the tranquil Aller, first with inflatable boats and later with a 6-meter cabin cruiser. His electrical engineering studies at HAW Hamburg took him from the southern Heidekreis (Lower Saxony) to the Hanseatic city. Ralf Marquard has been working for the BOOTE editorial team since 1997, where he trained as a test editor. He tests both small inflatable boats and larger yachts. His personal boat is a 4.50 meter long, self-built wooden boat with a 50 hp outboard motor. In 2007, he was appointed deputy editor-in-chief at BOOTE.
