One month before the first race in Europe at Lake Como, the E1 Series has filled the last gap in the race calendar in March 2026. In addition to the race in Nigeria, a second race will now also take place in Africa this season.

Luanda: New stage for electric racing

Will Smith, one of the series' most prominent team owners, was there in person to announce the new stop on the racing calendar. Smith sees the involvement of the E1 Series as more than just a sporting event. At the press conference, he commented as follows:

Africa has always embodied passion and relentless drive. E1 in Angola is more than just a moment; it's a movement."

For the still young racing series, the presence of superstars is a decisive factor in marketing itself globally. In addition to Will Smith, the ten teams are backed by other celebrities such as Rafael Nadal, Tom Brady and Didier Drogba.

Focus on sustainability

But why Luanda? The Angolan capital was not chosen by chance. Luanda is considered one of Africa's most important maritime gateways and, according to the E1 Series, is investing heavily in sustainable technologies, particularly in hydropower. Alejandro Agag, founder and chairman of E1, emphasised: "Luanda fits perfectly with E1's mission to hold races in places that embody innovation, ecological ambition and a deep connection to water." Angolan Tourism Minister Márcio de Jesus Lopes Daniel also sees the race as an opportunity to position Angola as a destination for responsible tourism.

RaceBirds: The E1 Series reaches the south

The race in September will be the first of its kind in southern Africa. Fans can look forward to the futuristic "RaceBirds" - all-electric racing boats driven by mixed teams of male and female pilots. The UIM E1 World Championship was launched in 2020 by Alejandro Agag and Rodi Basso.

Agag founded the Formula E and Extreme E racing series before the E1. He is considered a pioneer in the electrification of racing on water and on land. Rodi Basso, a former engineer at Ferrari and Red Bull Racing, is the technical director and contributes his expertise from Formula 1 directly to the development of the so-called RaceBirds.
