Until now, petrol engines with catalytic converters were rarely seen in boats. For the small market on Lake Constance, there are two specialists, Maier and Pflug, who fitted boat engines with catalytic converters years ago. However, due to new standards in America, engine manufacturers are now fitting their engines with the "cleaners" themselves.
We drove such an engine in the Glastron GT 205 on the Rhine. The 5.0-litre V-eight from Volvo Penta delivers 270 hp and accelerates the test boat at lightning speed. The bow lifts only slightly and the Glastron begins to glide from 2200 rpm.
She glides well from around 2500 rpm at 21.4 knots. This is also the most economical speed, with 1.01 l/sm running through the fuel line. With a petrol supply of 132 l minus 15% reserve, this results in a range of 111 nm. Full-throttle fans speed across the water at a respectable 47.2 knots.
The entire test can be found in the current June issue of BOOTE.
