The trends are often set in the USA and then gradually spill over into Europe. One of these success stories is the bowrider (boats with an open bow and seating area at the front). Viewed with a great deal of scepticism for years, this type of boat has now become well established in Europe too. German boat builder Michael Hammermeister has even gone so far as to offer his Hellwig Milos V 580 as a bowrider so as not to have to send the increasing number of customers with bowrider wishes to the American competition.
We drove two versions on the Maas near Roermond. The distinguishing features are the look and engine. The boat with the discreet red stripe is powered by a 3.0-litre Mercruiser MPI with exhaust gas purification (catalytic converter) and the more upbeat version (orange stripe and wakeboard tower) has a 3.0-litre carburettor engine, which is 1650 euros cheaper than its injection brother.
Both engines produce 135 hp and transmit their power to the water via Alpha-One propulsion (2.0:1 ratio) with 3-x-13¾"-x-21" aluminium propellers. This means that the boats travel at the same speed at the same rpm, which is about right. To create the tables, we calculated the mean value from the measurement data. It is noticeable that the carburettor engine revs higher than the fuel-injected version and runs about one knot faster.
You can find the entire test with all the measurement results in the current August issue of BOOTE, which is available from today.
