Off into the countryside! With this outboard bowrider from Hellwig Bootsmanufaktur, fast trips on rivers and lakes are a real pleasure.

All the important information about the boat is already hidden in the name of the "green flounder". The "630" stands for the length of 6.30 metres. "AB" indicates the motorisation and reveals that it is an outboard boat. "Open" refers to the open bow, as the Milos is also available with an inboard engine and as a cabin version. The colourful bowrider can be sailed both inland and on coastal waters.

There is plenty of space on the V 630 if the CE-approved number of people (6) is not exceeded. The manufacturer states a weight of around 790 kg (boat without engine). According to the catalogue, the Mercury F150 EFI fitted to our test candidate weighs a good 206 kg. This means that the Milos weighs a good 1100 kg including engine, fuel and some accessories. Accordingly, you need at least a trailer in the 1500 kg class for road transport, but with a width of 2.20 m, you don't need an oversize licence.

On the water, a 150 hp extra-long outboard provided propulsion during our test. If that's not enough, Hellwig says that engines up to 225 hp can be attached to the transom. At slow speed (3.7 knots), the turning circles measure a maximum of 1 1/4 boat lengths in diameter when travelling forwards and backwards. Reversing from starboard to port takes three seconds; conversely, the hull needs twice as long to change course.

We noted 6.5 knots or 1000 rpm as the optimum harbour speed. At this speed, there is hardly any swell and the waves are small. The Milos also remains easy to steer. The yawing typical of a glider only occurs at high displacement speeds.

The bowrider makes the transition from displacement to planing speed between 1750 rpm and 2750 rpm. The bow rises and briefly blocks the view ahead. We found the most economical planing speed to be a good 22 knots or 3000 rpm. The Milos V 630 runs more "light-footed" at 3500 rpm and 26.5 knots. With just over 1/2 trim, the hull glides optimally over the water; the steering also works easily and provides noticeable "feedback". The hull runs through waves at this speed (3500 rpm) without splashing water.

Consumption is only slightly higher at 0.71 l/sm compared to 0.65 l/sm with economic planing: with one tank of fuel (160 l) minus 15% reserve, you can travel only 17 nm further at 209 nm than at just under 27 kn. In terms of driving noise, the value of 78 dB/A is even lower than with economic planing. We were able to log a maximum speed of 45 knots, with the rev counter showing 5650 rpm. At this speed, 1.19 litres of fuel per nautical mile run through the pipe to the engine. In terms of noise, the needle of the measuring device moved in the range of 89 dB/A at full throttle.

The Milos copes with extreme manoeuvres "unimpressed". The hull brakes itself as it turns tighter and tighter without rocking over its longitudinal axis and follows the skipper's steering commands precisely.
The driver and co-driver each sit on an adjustable bucket seat with plenty of lateral support and good upholstery. This also applies to the U-shaped rear bench and the seating in the bow. Both can be converted into two additional

The boat is also equipped with a well-dimensioned telescopic bathing ladder at the stern. For mooring, the bowrider has six suitable and easily accessible mooring cleats, and the all-round rubber rubbing strake protects the gelcoat from damage when mooring and locking. A tarpaulin, bimini top or camper top are only available at extra cost, and a compass is not included in the standard or accessories list.

Conclusion: With its open bow, the Milos V 630 AB Open offers plenty of space for passengers. We rate the workmanship and handling characteristics as good across the board. If you decide to buy the "55 years of Hellwig" package (37,490 euros), you can even save a lot of money.
