Lots of riding fun with little mass. With the Husky R5, the Finnish shipyard Finnmaster is launching a five-metre-long aluminium bowrider onto the market. The lightweight can be easily trailered and reaches a top speed of 36.5 knots with 100 hp.

For over 30 years, Finnmaster has been known for designing boats for the tough conditions of Scandinavian coastal waters. While the manufacturer uses classic GRP in its main series, the hulls of the Husky boats are made of aluminium. The R5 is the entry-level model in Husky's R series.

Layout and details

Finnmaster itself summarises the layout under the generic term "Smart Design". The open foredeck is kept simple and offers space for equipment or a free standing area for fishing. It can accommodate a total of two people. A box provides additional storage space and doubles as a seat. In the central cockpit area behind the high windscreen made of safety glass, there are two swivelling offshore seats with sliding rails, which offer good lateral support even when driving in a sporty style.

The stern end is formed by a full-length bench, whose storage space remains accessible even when the cushions are fitted. Two bathing platforms have also been integrated into the layout for access via the stern. The integrated fender poles in the bow of the boat are also practical, allowing the fenders to be stowed away easily while travelling.

Driving fun with a downside

During the test on the water, the Husky R5 proved to be very agile. With the maximum permissible engine power of 100 hp at the stern, the lightweight aluminium boat can be moved almost like a go-kart. Every slightest movement of the steering wheel is immediately realised. Acceleration is also really fun due to the low weight of 535 kilograms. The boat glides quickly and reaches a top speed of 36.5 knots.

The low weight and choice of materials also have their disadvantages, which are particularly noticeable in choppy seas. As it lacks the necessary mass to cut through waves with confidence, the hull of the boat quickly becomes unsteady. In addition, the aluminium hull transmits feedback to the crew very directly and dryly. However, the R5 is an agile boat that is easy to manoeuvre and trailer if you are sailing on inland waters or in sheltered areas.
