BOAT TEST: The new NC 11 from Jeanneau brings a breath of fresh air to the motorboat fleet. We drove the 10.85 metre family cruiser on the Elbe near Hamburg.

For many years there were four major series in Jeanneau's motorboat segment: Cap Camarat, Leader, Merry Fisher and Prestige. The latter was separated from Jeanneau and is now run as an independent brand. As a "replacement", the shipyard has been offering the NC series since the beginning of 2010 - NC stands for "New Concept". It is immediately apparent that this really is a new type of boat, and this was duly honoured with the "Powerboat of the Year" award.

The design has been fundamentally changed, and the layout with the saloon driving position and sunroof as well as the cabin roof that extends far aft over the cockpit are reminiscent of Scandinavian boats. However, the NC 11 is not only at home in northern Europe, but also in the south with its practical sunroof and the corresponding equipment package. It makes sense that the "southern package" includes air conditioning and the northern version includes heating.

We tested the 10.85 m long NC 11 extensively on the Elbe near Hamburg; our boat was motorised with two Volvo Penta D3-200 diesel inboards, each with 190 HP or 140 kW and duoprop drives. The maximum speed was 32.8 knots.

Ralf Marquard discovered his enthusiasm for boating on the tranquil Aller, first with inflatable boats and later with a 6-meter cabin cruiser. His electrical engineering studies at HAW Hamburg took him from the southern Heidekreis (Lower Saxony) to the Hanseatic city. Ralf Marquard has been working for the BOOTE editorial team since 1997, where he trained as a test editor. He tests both small inflatable boats and larger yachts. His personal boat is a 4.50 meter long, self-built wooden boat with a 50 hp outboard motor. In 2007, he was appointed deputy editor-in-chief at BOOTE.
