Behind the abbreviation "TNCS 32AC" of our test boat is a 10.15 metre long displacer of the more modern version of an "Ur-Linssen". The New Classic Sturdy series is a continuation of the Linssen House The new Sturdys continue the extremely successful design from the early days of the shipyard. The first Sturdys from 1975 to 1985 - then still called St. Jozef Vlets - were designed by Jos Linssen, the founder of the shipyard.

The models are now designed by Linssen designer Anne Elsinga. Although he sticks to the classic sturdy lines for the outer contours, a lot has happened below deck and below the waterline over the years: experience has been incorporated and has triggered further developments, as is often the case.

Two different steel plate thicknesses are still used for the hull and superstructure of the boats: 5 mm plates are used for the hull to ensure high stability, while the superstructure is 4 mm thick. This type of construction lowers the overall centre of gravity, which reduces rolling movements and heeling, while at the same time increasing the self-righting forces. This characteristic is perceived by the crew as safe and very seaworthy. On closer inspection, we also noticed the good workmanship and accuracy of fit of the wooden fittings and doors. Overall, the Linssen The New Classic Sturdy 32 AC does not have any major processing flaws.

Driving and manoeuvring

Only the D2-75 from Volvo Penta is used for the engine. This is a four-cylinder diesel with a displacement of 2200 cc. The unit is cooled by means of dual-circuit cooling. The engine has a 12 V alternator with a maximum output of 115 A for charging the on-board batteries. The Volvo Penta's rated output of 55 kW is transmitted to the propeller shaft by a 2.8:1 ratio gearbox, and the mounted bronze propeller converts it into thrust.

The boat is steered from the outside steering position on the rear deck, where the skipper sits on a Linssen folding chair with backrest and armrests. The single-lever control is well positioned and is easy to operate while sitting or standing. The elevated position of the helm station on the aft deck provides good all-round visibility.

The safety glass panes of the three-part folding windscreen are not tinted and have windscreen wipers, but no washer or defroster. We also missed a compass on board "our" Linssen.

Due to their type, boats such as The New Classic Sturdy 32 AC are not "manoeuvring world champions" because of their shaft drive. This is remedied by a bow thruster, which is installed in the Luxe or Royal edition at no extra cost. Equipped with this helper, turning on the spot in harbours is no problem. Without the assistance of the rudder, the turning circles are 1 ½ boat lengths over starboard and 1 boat length over port with the gear engaged forwards. When travelling astern, the diameters were 3 boat lengths, which is typical for displacement boats.

Steering round to either side is only possible with increased throttle. - We determined the maximum harbour speed to be 3.7 kn or 1250 rpm, because up to this mark, wave formation and surge water are kept to an absolute minimum. On the open stretch, we put the throttle on the table and logged a top speed of 7.2 knots. At this speed, the rev counter showed exactly 2900 rpm, which is not quite the right value for the maximum speed of 3000 rpm recommended by Volvo Penta. When checking the noise level at the helm, the needle of our measuring device did not rise above the 70 dB/A mark.

The calculated hull speed is around 7 knots, which is only just below the maximum speed, so making progress on fast-flowing waters with the TNCS 32 AC is probably more of a game of patience.

The fuel consumption at 7.2 kn is 2.16 l/sm. With the 240 litre diesel tank, a non-stop trip of 95 nm can be managed until the 15 % reserve is reached. We determined an economic speed of 1750 rpm, with the hull moving through the water at 5.1 knots, and the noise level is low at 61 dB/A at the helm. All you can hear is the "sound" of the waves. In terms of fuel consumption, the Volo Penta D2-75 consumes 0.67 l/sm at this speed. This means you only have to refuel after 305 nm to maintain the reserve.

As far as the handling characteristics of the Linssen The New Classic Sturdy 32 AC at top speed are concerned, we can only say that everything is excellent. The hydraulic steering in combination with the large steering wheel is smooth and easy to control in every position. The hull runs straight and stable, and we did not notice any heeling when shifting weight.

You only have to correct your course slightly after changing speed. As the circles get tighter and tighter, the boat first leans into the curve and then out again. This behaviour should not be seen as a shortcoming. When turning, the hull follows the steering command quickly and directly. The Linssen also masters lower speeds.

Engine, tank, electrics

Two maintenance-free 85 Ah gel batteries provide sufficient voltage in the 12 V electrical system of the 32 AC, and there is also a separate maintenance-free 90 Ah starter battery. The three power sources are permanently housed in a box in the engine compartment. If you don't want to start the engine to charge the batteries, you can "recharge" the latter at the jetty using a shore power connection with a 25 metre cable and automatic charger.

The 230 V system is protected up to 16 A, and an RCD switch and indicator light are also installed ex shipyard. There are also automatic main fuses plus a separate fuse for each consumer to protect and switch off the 12 V on-board power supply (via the main switch located on the saloon seating area). The control panel is located below deck at the side of the passageway into the forward cabin and is easy to see and operate.

The engine compartment lid in the saloon is opened for the daily engine visual inspection. Due to a lack of space, the table, which is normally on the hatch, has to be lifted onto the seating area. When it is open, you can easily access all the important things, such as the on-board cooling water outlet, seawater filter, oil dipstick, fuel filter with water separator and V-ribbed belt. All installations in the engine compartment and under the driving position are well executed, hoses are firmly secured and cables are laid in protective conduits or cable ducts.

Security

The standard safety equipment includes a 5.9 kg fire extinguishing system in the engine compartment and the option of interrupting the fuel supply to the engine from the saloon, as well as an emergency steering device under the bed in the aft cabin and a fixed and a flexible electric bilge pump. There is no manual bilge pump on board the Linssen, as required by BOOTE. The 0.28 m wide side deck in combination with the sturdy stainless steel railing that runs all the way round the boat and an anti-slip structure ensure safe movement on deck.

In the Royal and Luxe editions, the shipyard equips the cockpit floor, which otherwise also has an anti-slip structure, with teak as standard. Should a crew member have a mishap after all: Linssen provides every The New Classic Sturdy 32 AC with a first-aid kit.

Living and equipment

The TNCS 32 can be ordered in two different versions. One as a sedan with a large saloon and cockpit or, like our test boat, as an AC (Aft Cabin) with an additional aft cabin.
cabin. In addition to the different number of berths, the position of the driving position is another significant difference between the two models. In the AC version, the skipper sits below deck in the Sedan version.

The saloon of our TNCS 32 AC is accessed via a combination of entrance door and sliding hatch, which can be used for ventilation below deck. The saloon has a seating area for four people, opposite which is the L-shaped galley. The equipment includes a stainless steel sink set into the worktop, an 80-litre refrigerator and a three-burner gas hob. Practical: while cooking, you can ventilate directly through the sliding window.

Numerous storage options in the form of drawers and cupboards are available for stowing cutlery, crockery and food. The storage compartments under the saloon bench seat can be used to store travelling utensils. In the owner's cabin, there is a wardrobe on each side of the double bed and further storage options.

The separate shower and toilet rooms at the front are only accessible via the bow cabin. Once in the shower, people over 1.78 metres tall have to "keep their heads down". However, there is still 3 cm more headroom in the toilet room. The toilet room in the aft cabin is the lowest, with a headroom of just under 1.60 metres. The rest of the cabin offers significantly more space. The 2.00 x 1.45 m bunk is ideal for two people; the double bed is equipped with the same firm but not hard cold foam mattress and slatted frame as in the forward cabin.
