With the 218 SS (Super Sport), the US boat manufacturer Monterey is launching theSmallest boatof the six-model series on the water. The Super Sport models are bowriders with a length of between 6.6 metres and 9.7 metres.

The shipyard has CE-certified the 218 SS for coastal waters and for crews of up to seven people. To the potentialTrailer boat The Monterey with its width of just 2.48 metres and length of 6.60 metres is the perfect choice. This means that the bowrider can be transported by land without a special licence.

Provided you have the right trailer with a total weight of at least 2200 kg and towing vehicle for the 1656 kg unladen weight. The easiest way to get on board the Monterey is via the bathing platform with bathing ladder integrated at the stern. The stern passageway, which is located under the cushions of the sunbed and stern bench seat, is particularly practical. There are numerous seating options for the crew in the cockpit.

The bow offers space for two people. A so-called bow filler cushion, which turns the two individual seats into oneSunbathing lawn is offered by the shipyard for €282 on the accessories list. The driver and front passenger sit in bucket seats that provide plenty of lateral support and can be adjusted in all directions. The seating area in the rear of the 218 SS is no less cosy.

TheUpholstery like all the others, are firm and sporty without becoming uncomfortable on long journeys. The passenger seats are held in place by suitably dimensioned and elegant-lookingHandles.

We tested how well the boat moves on the water on the Rhine near Schierstein.Economical the Monterey 218 SS glides smoothly in combination with our test engine, aMercury 5.0 MPI petrol inboard engineat an engine speed of 2500 rpm to 3000 rpm. AFuelling of 136 litres is sufficient for a non-stop route of 97 nm until the reserve (15 %) is reached. TheNoise level at the driving position is 77 db/A at 19 kn. It is exactly 4 db/A louder when the 218 SS is travelling at 26 kn (3000 rpm).

TheMaximum speed we logged in at an impressive 45 knots. According to the display, the power trim is a good halfway up the scale. At this speed, 1.70 l/sm of fuel runs through the petrol line to the engine. The kilometres travelled at this speedExtreme manoeuvressuch as 180° turns, slaloms and increasingly tighter circles, the hull completed them safely with the drive trimmed completely to the transom and without the boat becoming too heavy.Dangerous over the longitudinal axis. Travelling over sports boat waves at 26 knots is just as safe and comfortable. Although the hull is clearly noticeable, it is not excessively hard and deflects the spray with the hull at a shallow angle far away from the bow.

When travelling at slow speeds, the Monterey exhibits typical gliding behaviour: The 218 SS yaws slightly (the bow swings back and forth automatically) when travelling straight ahead. AtPort manoeuvres the fuselage does not react immediately to the rerouting, but a few secondsDelayedwhich is observed on most boats of this type.

In matters ofProcessing andInstallation the Monterey 218 Super Sport shows its best side. In theEngine compartmentAll cables are tied together and secured with cable ties, both in the cockpit and under the dashboard.
With the standard equipment, the Monterey 218 SS does not fulfil the BOOTE requirements. Neither a full tarpaulin (harbour tarpaulin) nor bow and cockpit tarpaulins are included.Base price of € 51 471with the Mercury 4.5 litre V6 and its 250 hp. The compass and windscreen wipers are also not part of the standard equipment.
