At the 40th International Motorboat Race in Traben-Trarbach, a racing class in motorboat racing used CO2-neutral synthetic fuels for the first time
Premiere at the 40th International Motorboat Race in Traben-Trarbach: For the first time, eFuels were used instead of fossil fuel at the race on the Moselle. This makes the Formula 5 boats the first boat class to compete using CO2-neutral synthetic fuel. This was provided by the eFuels Forum.

In October 2023, the Executive Committee of the German Motor Yacht Association (DMYV) decided that future motorboat races should be as CO2-neutral as possible. In order to promote this change, the DMYV will cover the additional costs of CO2-neutral eFuels compared to fossil fuels at the races.

The F5 teams completed a free practice session and three races for the International German Championship at the race on 8 and 9 June. The results after the premiere: no problems that could be attributed to the use of the new synthetic fuel, fast, exciting races and satisfied teams and drivers. In future, further racing classes are to be converted to the use of the CO2-neutral fuel.

New fuel has proven itself for motorboat racing

The reigning German champion of the 2023 Formula 5 season, André Zeipelt, was satisfied with the new fuel in the tank: "I can't find anything negative so far. The engine ran perfectly and had plenty of power, and the race went great!" said Zeipelt, who won all three races on his eFuel debut in Traben-Trarbach and thus clinched overall victory in Formula 5.

The availability of the fuel, which is not yet widely available, has been secured through a partnership between the DMYV and the eFuels Forum. "With the successful use of synthetic fuels in the first motorboat races, we are showing that eFuels are not at a disadvantage compared to fossil fuels. On the contrary: just as with cars, lorries and two-wheelers, they offer an excellent opportunity to operate this sport in a CO2-neutral way," says Lorenz Kiene from the eFuels Forum. The eFuels Forum was founded in the summer of 2021 and now consists of 50 medium-sized energy companies and interest groups from all over Germany as well as the technology partner CAC Engineering GmbH. The interest group has set itself the goal of informing the general public about eFuels.

Frank Dettmering, President of the German Motor Yacht Association, feels vindicated: "Following last year's ground-breaking decision by the DMYV Executive Committee to promote motorboat racing in such a way that it can be practised in a CO2-neutral manner, this premiere is a milestone in the history of motorboat racing. We will also support the racing teams in the other racing classes to switch to eFuels as soon as possible in order to actively promote environmental and climate protection here too."
