The American Stingray shipyard mainly builds boats in the 18- to 25-foot class. The product lines: Bowriders, boats for sport fishing, fast SX racers and day cruisers - family boats with overnight accommodation. Our test boat, the Stingray 250 CR with a D3 190 Volvo Penta diesel engine, belongs to this category. The rig is trailerable with a towing vehicle that can pull 3 tonnes.
The processing deficiencies of the Stingray are typical for the US: unbroken and unsealed cut edges in the plastic and protruding pointed screw ends hidden by insulating material, especially on the hinge of the engine compartment flap. If the hatch is open, there is a risk of injury. The GRP hull has a high-gloss gelcoat on the outside and a protective coating on the inside; the quality of the electrical and technical installations is good to satisfactory.
Driving and manoeuvring: When reversing - steering from one side to the other - the 250 CR does not react to the change of direction when travelling slowly in reverse. This requires additional assistance with the throttle. When travelling slowly forwards, the test boat reacts to every change of course and goes where it is supposed to. However, weight shifts in the boat must be compensated for with a slight course correction.
Up to 1200 rpm (6 knots), the stern wave remains within an acceptable range. At 2300 rpm, the bow lowers and the boat goes into planing mode (a good 13 knots). With 100 rpm more than the maximum speed recommended by the manufacturer, we measured a top speed of 35 knots. Exceeding the maximum speed by 100 rpm is fine in view of the low load condition. Every acceleration is met with powerful acceleration - water skiers will be delighted. The foresight during acceleration is always clear.
