The Polish shipyard Atlantic Marine is expanding its model range with the Open 750. The number of Open models has thus increased from four to five boats. The 750 is also the largest vessel in the model range. In addition to the Open variants, the shipyard also builds three other categories under the names Adventure, Day Cruiser and Sun Cruiser. With the new model, the range now comprises a total of twelve boats, ranging from a 4.90 m centre console to a 9 m cabin boat.
The Open series is characterised by the space layout in the bow. In contrast to the Sun Cruiser series, there is a seating area instead of a raised bow floor, which is helpful when mooring and casting off as well as when locking. The disadvantage of this bow design compared to the Sun Cruiser (Cuddy Cabin) models is that the cabin is correspondingly small. Incidentally, the Sun Cruiser 730 was the model for the new Open 750. Customers wanted more space on deck for fishing without having to do without a cabin altogether.
The easiest way to get on board the 750 is via the stern passage on the port side, whereby the small attached bathing platform is very helpful. There is a fixed stern bench seat in the centre of the aft cockpit. To the left and right of this, the crew can fold out two additional benches if required. In this way, the boat combines a large amount of space for standing, as required by anglers, with ample seating, which is very popular for trips with family and friends.
The driver and front passenger sit on two adjustable bucket seats that provide good lateral support. The firm upholstery paired with the footrest ensures a relaxed ride even on long tours. The bow provides further relaxation on board the Open. This is equipped with a U-shaped seating area and a bench seat attached to the driving position. Sun-seekers can easily transform the two seats, table plus inlay boards and additional cushions into a sun lounger that stretches across the entire bow.
When it comes to motorisation, the shipyard recommends outboards between 150 and 300 hp. In our case, the dealer installed the brand new Honda BF 250 iST. You can read about what exactly is new about the engine in BOOTE 09/15 from page 70. The key data of the Honda are V6 with 250 hp from 3.6 litres of displacement. The manufacturer specifies the full-load speed range for the engine as 5300 to 6300 rpm. This means that the maximum 6000 rpm achieved by us is fully within the target range. This shows that the stainless steel 3 x 14" x 19" propeller is a good match for the boat-motor combination.
This statement is further emphasised by the top speed of 41 knots. At this speed, 2.13 l/sm of petrol runs through the injection nozzles into the engine. At this speed, the 260-litre fuel tank is empty down to a 15% reserve after just 104 nm. The Open 750 travels much further in the 4000-4500 rpm range, which is the most economical way to travel. The Honda consumes 1.28 l/sm, which results in a calculated range of 173 nm before refuelling. The cruising speed at these speeds is between 25 and 29 knots. The noise level is 77 db/A at 4000 rpm and 79 db/A at 4500 rpm, which is below the BOOTE comfort limit of 80 db/A.
The manoeuvrability and directional stability of the hull can be seen at low speeds. The full circles with the gear engaged forwards measure 1 1⁄4 boat lengths on both sides. When travelling in reverse, the space required is slightly less with one boat length. The straight-line behaviour of the boat is normal for a glider, the hull yaws slightly so that the skipper has to correct the course occasionally. The transition from displacement to planing takes place quickly with the bow lifted. The foresight is only covered briefly and not completely by the bow.
In fast turns and circles, the Open shows its good-natured side. In other words, before the lateral forces become too high or the hull begins to tip over its longitudinal axis, the propeller loses grip and the hull continues to slow down. The 750 follows every course change promptly and precisely, both when the rudder is jerked and on the slalom course. The stern wave is flat and is therefore well suited for water skiing.
To avoid taking up storage space on board the Open 750 with accessories such as table legs and a water ski tow bar, the designer has integrated special storage options into the side walls at the height of the driving position. This means that the Open 750 offers plenty of storage space in the bow under the benches. At this point, however, it should be mentioned that there are neither springs nor gas pressure regulators on the bow hatches. The rear bench seat hatch is different: the Polish boat builders have fitted gas pressure dampers to prevent the hatch from closing unintentionally.
There is additional storage space in the slip cab in the driver's cab. The companionway to the cab is located in front of the co-driver's seat and is closed by a matt white Plexi sliding door if required. There is a folding bunk and a washbasin inside. A chemical or pump toilet can be ordered as an option. Ventilation is either via a small porthole or the large sliding hatch. Anchoring is easy thanks to the bow fitting with guide roller and self-draining anchor locker. For mooring in the harbour or for locking, the fenders can be attached either to the sturdy railing in the bow or to the six well-dimensioned cleats. The mooring lines can also be easily attached to the latter.
In terms of workmanship, it can be said that the Polish boat builders at Atlantic Marine know their trade. All installations and surfaces are neatly finished, only the finish (silicone seams and GRP sealing) could be improved.
