Sunbathing is no problem on the foredeck of the Atlantic Sun Cruiser 655! But we didn't just put the new boat through this "endurance test"...

Atlantic-Yachting is one of the shipyards thatin Augustow, Poland have settled here. A place where other well-known shipyards from Europe and even the USA have their boats manufactured. Atlantic has been producing its own series there for over ten years, but also carriesCommissioned work from other manufacturers.

The shipyard assures us that everything that leaves its workshops is pure, first-class craftsmanship. We can confirm this for our test boat, the Atlantic Sun Cruiser 655, with the exception of a few details.

These include super-smooth plastic surfaces, an almost seamless protective coating, sanded and sealed cut-outs and firmly screwed hinges and cleats. The man with the silicone syringe However, the upholstery didn't have its best day: the seams in the cabin are not completely smooth, but show a few signs of wear. The upholstery, on the other hand, is superb: the covers fit perfectly and are pleasantly firm.

The most beautiful sunbathing area on deck is on the foredeck. There is plenty of space for two people to bask in the sun.

There is a bench at the rear, which is designed more for sitting than lying down. Together with the swivelling driver and passenger seats and table, this creates a cosy corner or a place to serve snacks. If you want to prepare the latter, you can have aMinipantry with cooker and sink install. A refrigerator is on the accessories list for cooling drinks and food.

To refresh yourselfyou can either jump into the water under the stern shower or from the aft bathing platform. You can get back on the boat via the bathing ladder and the starboard entrance. The bow tip and the side deck provide further access points.

The crew can get below deck through a sliding door with locking mechanism. In the entrance area there is a locker on the port side and opposite aChemical toilet with cover. This arrangement is practical, because if you need to go to the toilet at night, you don't have to convert the bunk first (usually by folding up the centre cushion), as is often the case with cuddie cabins. You simply crawl out of the bunk and sit down on the "bowl" in no time at all. In day mode, the bunk isa seating area with moderate seat heightThe matching table is made of plastic and has a non-slip edge.

To prevent the skipper and co-driver from slipping, the shipyard has fitted sports bucket seats with high side sections.

The seat can be folded up for travelling in a standing position and folded down for aOptimum knee clearance the driver's seat can be adjusted in all directions. With the exception of the forward/backward function, the passenger seat offers the same configuration. The co-pilot uses the handrail at the top of the driving position to hold on. A Plexiglas screen protects the passenger from wind and splash water.

The instrumentation is equipped with an easy-to-read engine control (Smartcraft) and fuel gauge. The installed chart plotter from Garmin costs just as much as the compass, which we require on "Category C" boats. Atlantic relies on a hydraulic system to steer the outboard motor, which impresses with its ease of movement and accuracy in all sailing situations.

The same applies to the circuit,Here, however, the lever adjustment is annoying. The expression "lever on the table" was taken too seriously, because when you accelerate to full throttle, the lever lies directly on the dashboard. There is no space left for the hand between the lever and the driving position.

We are thus serving aMercury 150 EFIwhich brings the 655 Sun Cruiser from displacement to planing speed in about 3 seconds without obstructing visibility. From 19 knots, the Atlantic not only glides well, but is also economical when travelling. In this situation, almost 160 nm are possible with one tank of fuel plus 15% reserve. Even at full throttle, there is enough fuel for over 100 nm of non-stop sailing.

We trimmed by feel during the entire test phase, as the trim indicator did not work.

If you forget to trim the outboard motor downwards when cornering at speed, you will quickly notice aAir-snapping propeller.Without trim, it also draws air, but noticeably later. The only thing to do then is to take the throttle off and start again. Important not only for beginners: the hull does not rock or hook in any situation, which avoids unpleasant riding situations.

If you want to have fun behind the boat, hook into the standard water ski eyelet. Water skiers can hook in here just as easily as tube skiers or bobsleigh riders. The stern wave shows a typical course: at first it has quite a strong height, but then flattens out more and more as the speed increases. At a slow speed of between around 4 and 6 knots, the Atlantic continues straight ahead. Even if one person shifts their weight, the course only needs to be corrected slightly.

To quickly check the oil or the fuel filter on the outboard motor, it is practical to stand on the large bathing platforms next to the engine.

The easiest way for the "screwdriver" to carry out service work is if the boat has beenon the trailer is slipped. The lines from the outboard motor to the onboard outlet are located in a flexible protective hose; further forwards they run in a laminated pipe.

The shipyard laid the cables firmly and clearly under the driving position and the outboard motor hull, with the subsequentWiring of the outboard motor however, the attachment does not look so neat. Apart from the fact that the fuel filter costs extra, the fuelling system is impressive; this includes a fixed tank, stopcock, two clamps on the hose connections and a secure tank cap.

Take two batteries (1 x extra)the power supply and are located in plastic boxes under the rear bench. Next to them is the selector switch, which can be used to "switch" the batteries depending on the desired operating mode. Fiddly: To open the lid of the rear box, the driver and passenger seats sometimes have to be turned to the side first.

For the 230 V shore power connection with or without charger, you pay an extra charge, just like for the tarpaulin and the fire extinguisher.

AsNavigation lighting The shipyard installs RINA-approved lights, which are not permitted on all waters in Germany. The boat can be moored to six cleats that match the size of the boat.

Conclusion

Thanks to its versatility, the Atlantic is a real all-rounder that is great fun for the carpool. With Mercury's 150 hp EFI, you are safe and agile when travelling. In terms of safety equipment, we are missing things like a hand bilge pump, compass, extra fuel filter and fire extinguisher in the standard equipment. The workmanship is of a good standard.
