The centre console models of the Montauk family are among the veterans of the traditional shipyard from Edgewater, Florida. It was exactly 60 years ago that Dick Fisher presented his first boat, and the first Boston Whaler with a centre console was launched in 1961.
At that time, the steering position was still made of plywood. This era
was also the era of the first Montauk.
A lot has happened since then. However, the boat builders have remained true to their core values to this day, as neither the high quality standards nor the double-shell construction with foam-filled cavities, which ensures unsinkability, have changed. All Montauk models have been reissued for the anniversary year.
These are not detailed improvements, but completely new developments. The flagship model, the 210, was added to the series in February 2018. At first glance, the test candidate appears to be almost identical to its predecessor. Only on closer inspection are the changes recognisable.
It starts with the fuselage, which has been recalculated. TheCorrections to the line layout are moderate. The first modification to the design of the deck is at the rear. Folding individual seats are fitted as standard on both sides, with the backrests folded down to form steps.
A rear bench seat is no longer offered, but a cockpit table remains in the programme. Although the design is the same, the standard double bench seat for the helmsman and co-driver is new.
Among them areStorage space; optionally a holding basin. Thanks to the folding backrest, the seat can be used in both directions. If this solution is not to the owner's taste, two variants with a tubular structure and additional rod holders are available. Apart from two new footrests and the fresh design, nothing has changed conceptually on the console.
TheControl stand seems tidier. The plastic windscreen with handrail is part of the standard equipment and a T-top with additional rod holders in the roof is also available again. A storage space is accessible in the console via the starboard door, which can also be fitted with a toilet.
The front deck area has also been redesigned. When the reclining cushions with insertable backrests are ordered, the result is a very comfortable reclining surface which, thanks to the extension insert, is significantly higher than that of the previous model, which was a little short and had no backrests.
The basis is again formed by a large storage space at the rear and an anchor locker at the front. The centre-folding sunbathing cushions, which release one half of the bow as a step without having to remove the cushion, are clever.
As before, the extensive range of accessories includes various ice boxes, including a padded version that serves as a seat in front of the console. The range also includes every conceivable accessory for keen anglers.
TheFamily funis not neglected. A towing bracket at the stern around the outboard motor is required for board sports. A stern shower with fresh water tank is also listed.
The Boston Whaler 210 Montauk is already well equipped with a Mercury F 150 EFI XL as standard. The new V6 Mercury F 200 DTS XL bolted to the test boat is also available for those who prefer a sporty driving style. This allows us to accelerate the boat to a stable planing speed in five seconds at 13.7 knots and 3000 rpm.
TheTop speed of 37.6 kn is reached after 15 seconds. Thanks to the 252 litre tank, a good 170 nautical miles are possible with a 15 per cent reserve.
During fast full circles, there were only five boat lengths in diameter, then significant cavitation set in. This is very unusual and was also noticed by Jeff Vaughn, Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Customer Service at Boston Whaler, who was present during our test drives.
When we investigate the matter later, the cause is quickly found. The engine was mounted one hole higher than required. Everyone agrees that a correctly mounted engine does not lead to this driving behaviour. However, all other manoeuvres show no abnormalities.
When travelling slowly, it takes four seconds for the boat to react when reversing. Slow full circles are mastered with 1.5 boat lengths in diameter and the directional stability is good. There is nothing to criticise in terms of handling and driving safety.
Measurement results
Movements of the electro-hydraulic steering are implemented directly and the boat always remains in a safe and controllable range, even if it is pulled away.
In terms of safety, the test boat is largely convincing. The fact that only electric bilge pumps are installed is not a problem thanks to the unsinkability.
A hand-held fire extinguisher is part of the basic equipment. The standard handrail in the side wall is certainly sufficient for the railing, but the optional railing versions of the test candidate offer better protection.
With theirBase price including standard motorisation of € 66660the boat is not a special offer, but the elaborate construction and excellent workmanship justify the price level.
Conclusion
The excellent handling characteristics of these indestructible boats and the very high level of quality guarantee many years of fun on the water and are associated with a good resale price.
