Our test boat, theGlastron GTS 245is the largest model in the series of theUS manufacturer. This is aBowrider with toilet roomThe boat has a spacious bow and cockpit plus an extra-large bathing platform.
With aLength of 7.32 m, width of 2.54 m and aWeight of 1810 kg the GTS 245 can still be fitted with aTrailer in the 2700 kg class on the road.
All these features make theBoat for beginners and familiesThe Glastron is a good choice for those who want to spend time on the water. The easiest way to get on board the Glastron is from the side or aft via theBathing platformTo access the cockpit from there, part of the upholstery on one side of the cockpit can be removed.Rear sun lounger open up. Underneath there is a level passageway with aAnti-slip structure.
The shipyard has equipped the cockpit with a U-shaped rear bench seat, two bucket seats and a table. As befits a bowrider, the front section of the GTS 245 features aGenerous V-shaped bench seat. This can be converted into a sun lounger using the insert cushion, on which two adult crew members can lie comfortably. A toilet on board is a particularly welcome feature for women.
The storage space in front of the passenger seat, which is fitted with a washbasin as standard, is ideal for this purpose. For an extra charge, the shipyard can also fit a Porta Potti here. How theChemical toilet the ventilation option via a porthole to the cockpit is also on the list of extras. The same applies to the shower on the bathing platform.
The skipper can choose from a total of 16 different engine and drive variants, all of which are petrol inboards from Mercury and Volvo Penta. The power range extends from 240 to 380 hp. A Mercury 6.2L 300 with Bravo III drive is installed in our test boat. This accelerates the GTS 245 to a top speed of 43 kn at 5400 rpm using a 26 P stainless steel propeller.
The lower planing limit is more leisurely, but also more economical, i.e. at 3000 rpm and 21 knots; this is also the most economical planing speed. Expressed in figures, this means a consumption of 1.25 l/sm at 21 knots and 2.12 l/sm at 43 knots. With one tank of fuel (capacity: 151 litres), this results in a range of 61 nm at maximum speed and 103 nm at economical planing speed before the last 15% reserve is used to search for bunker stations.
To avoid waves in the canal area, the Glastron's engine is not allowed to turn above 1500 rpm there. At this speed, the hull behaves in typical planing fashion, but the skipper rarely has to intervene. Thanks to the Bravo III drive, the Mercury accelerates the GTS 245 quickly from displacement speed to planing speed. The bow lifts only slightly, so that the foresight is maintained at all times. At planing speed, 3500 rpm proves to be the best speed.
The boat is agile and responds immediately to every steering command, while the hull glides cleanly and steadily through the water and stern waves of other sports boats. When travelling at top speed, the drive should be trimmed to the transom during turns and increasingly tight circles so that you don't rock over the longitudinal axis. On the slalom course, the hull follows every steering command; the skipper has to go the extra mile to rock it.
When it comes to equipment and safety, the Glastron GTS 245 shows strengths and weaknesses. Like almost all US sports boats, it is equipped with navigation lighting, which is not authorised on all German waters. Furthermore, there is no compass at the helm and you will also look in vain for a hand bilge pump.
The boat has six sufficiently dimensioned, extendable cleats from the shipyard to which it can be easily moored. The hull is protected by a suitably sized rubber and stainless steel rubbing strake. Fenders are best attached to the grab handle in the bow at the front, while the bimini pole is ideal for this at the rear.
Conclusion: The Glastron GTS 245 has a very modern look and its concept should go down well with newcomers and parents with children. Installations and handling characteristics are consistently good.
