A large cockpit, open foredeck with seating area and centre console and the right outboard motor make the 5 m long Uttern S52 an ideal boat for sports such as water skiing, wakeboarding or tubing. But anglers, sunbathers and swimmers will also get their money's worth with this all-rounder. The Uttern is authorised for a maximum of five people.
Trailering is easy: for the almost 500 kg plus engine weight (175 kg) you need a 1-t trailer, and a Golf-class car is sufficient as a towing vehicle.
The shipyard appropriately categorises its S52 in CE category C. These are inland and coastal areas. We sailed the boat on the Main near Kahl.
As Uttern belongs to the Brunswick Group, the German general importer Walter Mengel only offers Utterns with the group's own Mercury or Mariner engines. The 60 hp and 80 hp four-stroke engines are recommended. Our boat is fitted with the more powerful of the two engines - an F80 EFI. It brings the S52 quickly from displacement to planing speed between around 2000 rpm and 3200 rpm. The bow is only very briefly and slightly in the field of vision. This fast transition behaviour, together with the flat stern shaft, is a good prerequisite for water skiing and tubing, and the full load speed of 5900 rpm is a sign of optimum propeller tuning. Mercury recommends 5000 to 6000 rpm for its F80. This means that there is still plenty of speed reserve for a fully loaded boat.
