Admiral 72"No Rush" becomes the maritime legacy of fashion designer Giorgio Armani

For the Admiral 72, Giorgio Armani took to the drawing board. The yacht, which he designed both inside and out, breaks with convention and inspires as a total work of art with almost infinite details. We boarded the "No Rush" in Monaco.

What a glamorous and grandiose moment that would have been: Giorgio Armani stands on "his" 72 metre long yacht - the whole of Monaco at his feet. This picture would have gone around the world. Unfortunately, as we all know, this did not happen: the legendary fashion and design genius passed away at the age of 91 on 4 September, three weeks before the start of the Monaco Yacht Show 2025 and therefore before the world premiere of the Admiral 72 by Giorgio Armani.

The Milanese, who was almost worshipped like a god, at least in Italy, had already been active in the scene for decades and had both of his own Codecasas, the 50-metre "Mariù" and the 15-metre longer "Maìn", fitted out entirely to his taste. He also refined the interior of the 55-metre Admiral "Silver Star". However, the 72-metre newbuild with around 2,100 GT was another, much bigger challenge.

An Admiral as an explorer yacht for Giorgio Armani

Together with the design teams from Armani/Casa and The Italian Sea Group Centro Stile, he has by no means created a delicate beauty in the traditional sense, which would probably rarely or never leave the Mediterranean due to its concept. No, the Metamorphosis project, characterised by Armani both inside and out, is a genuine world cruiser that deserves the now overused term "explorer yacht" with a clear conscience.

The steel hull with a draught of 3.44 metres not only looks extremely robust, with ice class 1C FS (1D overall) it actually proves it. Other ingredients include two MTU sixteen-cylinder engines with exhaust gas purification, Dynamic Positioning System, a range of 6,000 nautical miles and a top speed of 17 knots. Behind the front hull flaps, a nine-metre-long Falcon Tenders saloon in the style of the mother ship is ready for use, while the open space above it functions as a touch-and-go helipad.

However, it is the striking aluminium superstructure in particular that catches the eye and polarises - and not just because of the metallic greige paintwork, which changes depending on the light. On the one hand, the superstructure barely tapers towards the top, so that even the sun deck extends over a width of 13 metres. On the other hand, it is due to the immense use of glass, whether on the owner's deck and bridge deck with a view ahead or even more strikingly in the form of the two covered lounges aft, which can be transformed into air-conditioned conservatories for tropical or cold climates via glass walls. While they may be reminiscent of "Skat" or "Bold" when closed, these areas on the Admiral 72 allow even more flexible use.

The same applies to the beach club with its fixed bathing platform. Thanks to its full width and length of several metres, it offers space for sun loungers as well as tables and seating areas, which, like all the furniture on board, are from Armani. Although specially made for the yacht, they were largely derived directly from the Armani/Casa collections. The bathing platform is partially protected from the sun by the decks above and from the wind and prying eyes at the sides thanks to glass panes.

Sofas integrated into the side walls serve as retreats on both sides, as does the adjoining beach club with terraces that can be folded down to the side. Thanks to the integrated glass elements, the semi-circular bar and the gym and spa area with massage room and steam bath invite you to stay longer, even when closed.

Giorgio Armani focussed on high quality

Two wide staircases lead up parallel to the main deck and the first of the two indoor-outdoor lounges, where the symmetry favoured by Giorgio Armani and the deliberate reduction to a few colours and materials are evident. Quality was all the more important to the master craftsman. Accordingly, the GA logo is proudly emblazoned on cushions, furniture, carpets, door handles and light switches everywhere on board. Unlike Stefano Gabbana, for example, with his Codecasa "Regina d'Italia"which was moored in Port Hercule at the same time as the MYS and impressed with its extremely opulent interior, Armani famously cultivated a completely different, less extroverted style. The Admiral 72 benefits from this, with his omnipresent initials crowning the elegantly simple atmosphere without appearing artificial or exaggerated.

Thanks to his meticulous work on the layout, Giorgio Armani succeeded in skilfully filling the wide decks with impressive heights with quantitatively manageable furniture. Every sofa, every table and every chair has enough space to make its own impact. At the same time, nothing seems lost, but harmoniously integrated and inviting. Instead of heavily darkened glass, Armani opted for a combination of blinds and sliding curtains with metal mesh, which are held magnetically to the floor. The glass floor of the more than five metre long pool with counter-current system creates a visual link between the main and owner's decks.

This sun deck is complemented by lavish sunbathing areas, lounge furniture, a veritable bar, the primary dining area for 14 people and Armani/Casa lighting. Two levels higher, the actual sundeck is divided into three sections, including a spa pool and sunbathing areas aft, a bar and stairs amidships under the massive equipment carrier with glass windscreen elements, as well as additional sofas and a fireplace in front of it in the open air.

The Master Refuge

There is a second fireplace on the owner's deck - in the bow, in front of the helipad. It would be hard to beat the view from the associated lounger over the flames and the yacht, for example as planned by the original owner in the Northwest Passage, in Patagonia or in the South Pacific. Less intimate, but all the more spacious, the Portuguese bridge presents itself as an additional terrace in front of the no less spectacular helm station with floor-to-ceiling glass panes, two pilot seats and a semi-circular couch behind it. The high quality of the materials and workmanship is less reminiscent of a work area than another guest area. Back on the owner's deck with the aforementioned outdoor fireplace and helipad ahead as well as the pool area aft, it is worth taking a closer look at the 180 square metre master retreat. Its 180-degree panorama can be enjoyed not only from the bed, which is set back a few metres, but also from the lounge in front of it.

The understated mix of colours and materials is Armani in its purest form. The muted palette includes neutral, soft tones with shades of beige, cream and taupe for leather and fabrics from the Armani/Casa portfolio. Sophisticated contrasts with Taj Mahal quartzite, Silk Georgette limestone and Calacatta gold are emphasised by darker accents of Canaletto walnut, black Marquinia marble, blue Macaubas quartzite or translucent onyx. Indirect lighting and table lamps with GA initials complement the daylight from the large glass surfaces. This symbiosis also benefits the owner's bathroom on the port side with a free-standing bath and fittings by Armani/Roca and the spacious dressing room on the starboard side in the style of an exclusive Armani boutique.

The staircase and the double-sided lift are located amidships. The owner's deck saloon, including bar and self-playing piano, is centred on the TV screen, which is discreetly concealed behind mirrored surfaces, as is the case everywhere on board.

At this point, guests do not take the seamless exit to the almost endless open-air area, but rather the steps down to the main deck, where the six colour-coded guest cabins are located. The foremost was designed as a VIP suite with a separate TV lounge. Thanks to its own bathroom, sofa bed and mobile partition wall, it can also be used as an independent cabin. The cabins are once again flooded with daylight - even via sloping skylights. High ceilings convey a grandiose feeling of space.

Giorgio Armani found elegant solutions

Finally, the path leads into the main lounge with two sofas and a round dining table, which at first glance appears somewhat undersized. However, its diameter can be almost doubled. Behind sliding doors, there is not a TV but a temperature-controlled champagne and wine cabinet - another example of how Giorgio Armani and Armani/Casa have succeeded in creating elegant yet practical solutions. Together with the many fine details, the result is a maritime work of art.

This first Admiral 72 by Giorgio Armani, which has already undergone several changes of ownership in its young age and was renamed "No Rush" after the Monaco Yacht Show, is not a one-off despite its rumoured sale price of 155 million euros. Brokerage firm IYC, which was closely involved in the Metamorphosis project from the outset and was responsible for the resale of the first example, is offering the Sister ship "Geco" from this summer at charter rates from 890,000 euros per week. The name could refer to the owner of the previous 55-Admiral yacht from 2020, which is itself listed for sale on IYC at the time of going to press.
