Powerful and efficient – that’s how the owners, the designers at Humphreys and the JFA shipyard described the ‘Canoa’. The anchors look like bullrings.

The French shipyard JFA Yachts has delivered ‘Canoa’. The 50-metre-long explorer combines an aluminium hull with GRP superstructure and is fitted with a hybrid propulsion system. With a range of over 5,000 nautical miles and ample stowage and tender capacity, long ocean crossings are planned.

“Canoa” is the longest vessel JFA Yachts has built to date. The shipyard, based in Concarneau, Brittany, developed the project in collaboration with Humphreys Yacht Design, who were responsible for the hull construction and exterior design. The interior design is by the Italian studio m2atelier in Milan. The yacht is classified by Lloyd’s Register and complies with the MCA LY3 regulations for commercial yachts. The First launch Construction of the 50-metre building began earlier this year.

Two-material construction

The hull of the “Canoa” is made of aluminium, whilst the superstructure is made of GRP. The Bretons aim to reduce the weight in the upper section and lower the centre of gravity. This improves stability, reduces fuel consumption and enhances comfort on board. JFA Yachts is already using this construction method on its Long Island catamarans and is now applying the experience gained to larger monohull yachts. According to the shipyard, this construction method has not previously been used on an explorer of this size.​

Efficient ‘Canoa’ hull shape

Humphreys Yacht Design has developed a fast-displacement hull that has been optimised for efficiency through hydrodynamic calculations. The design is intended to ensure that the ‘Canoa’ achieves economical fuel consumption at low cruising speeds, whilst also enabling higher speeds when conditions permit. The draught is two metres and the beam is 9.1 metres. Stabilisation is provided by one movable fin on each side and a gyroscopic stabilisation system. This technology is designed to minimise the vessel’s movement whilst underway and at anchor.

​Diesel-electric propulsion

Two MTU 12V 2000 M72 diesel engines work in conjunction with electric motors in a parallel hybrid system. Depending on the situation, the crew can choose between different propulsion modes. In port, when travelling at low speed or at anchor, the electric motors run quietly and without vibration. On long voyages, the diesel engines take over. A battery bank and solar panels power the on-board systems and, according to the shipyard, reduce overall energy consumption. Once the cruising speed of twelve knots has been reached and the tanks are full, the “Canoa” is expected to cover a distance of more than 5,000 nautical miles.

A dynamic positioning system automatically keeps the ‘Canoa’ in position without the need to drop anchor. This feature protects sensitive seabeds and works when the wind and current are not too strong. The system uses GPS data to control the propulsion units accordingly. This is a clear advantage for explorers wishing to anchor in sheltered bays or over reefs.

Essentials for long-haul travel

The aft deck has space for two large tenders. The larger one is lowered into the water by a davit on the port side. The Palfinger articulated jib crane handles smaller dinghies and water sports equipment. The interior of the mother ship is spread over four decks and accommodates ten guests and nine crew members. Large windows connect the rooms with the surroundings and let in natural light. Storage space, technical areas and equipment are designed for extended voyages without port calls. According to JFA Yachts, the sea trials of the ‘Canoa’ confirmed the vessel’s seaworthiness and the functionality of all systems.

Frédéric Jaouen, President of JFA Yachts, explains: “The delivery of ‘Canoa’ marks the culmination of several years’ work. Our aim was to build a true explorer yacht capable of travelling far and for long periods, whilst offering a high level of comfort and incorporating solutions for improved energy efficiency.” Tom Humphreys, Managing Director of Humphreys Yacht Design, adds: “From the outset, we wanted to create an explorer yacht that combines genuine long-range capability with high efficiency, good seakeeping and a distinctive exterior. The fact that the sea-trial results match our calculations confirms the collaborative approach taken by everyone involved in the project.”
