It is not unusual for large yachts to be built without an owner. In the Netherlands in particular, there are a number of shipyards that specialise in "on spec" construction. The yacht builders make advance payments and offer customers semi-custom projects up to 80 metres long, which they can accept more quickly than a one-off build. The financial risk is also lower. Feadship is better known for complex one-off builds, but has recently started to act as the initial builder of its own yachts. For "Sakura" the Dutch found a buyer before completion.
"ONE" appears to have been launched with a client. The choice of design studio for the interior design speaks in favour of this: the Parisian firm Gilles & Boissier is known for its work on the Baccarat Hotel in New York and less for yachts. Shipyards do not usually take risks with speculative projects and rely on designers from the nautical world. Feadship's latest launch also features a special teak deck layout. It is the first Feadship in which the wooden beams are arranged in a herringbone pattern. In favour of an on-spec construction is the charter-oriented layout, which also simplifies resale. The four guest cabins on the lower deck have direct access to the beach club, and there are also two master suites.
The exterior of the "ONE" is simple. The bow runs vertically and the decks are strictly horizontal. The exterior was created by Feadship's own design studio, Studio De Voogt. "The brief was to create a masculine design that is both timeless and elegant," says Thijs Orth, designer at Studio De Voogt. "The predominantly straight lines and bold shapes are combined with subtly nuanced surfaces that catch the light and make the entire yacht look interesting. As always, we worked very closely with the engineers." As an example, Orth points to the bevelled edge of the bulwark in the bow, which becomes increasingly flatter towards the aft. The same bevelled edge can also be found on the front edge of the large main deck windows and along the white-painted superstructure.
Edmiston is advertising "ONE" with a lift, gym, jacuzzi on the sun deck, pool, sauna and massage room. The 76 metres should be ready for delivery at the beginning of 2025. The London estate agents are asking for 172.5 million euros.
