The Dutch Oceanco shipyard had the imposing six-decker towed from Zwijndrecht to Alblasserdam, where it is finally being fitted out. The 111 metres will also be used for research.

The 111 metre long steel and aluminium construction with the construction number Y722 reached Oceanco's headquarters in Alblasserdam, passing beautiful brick Gothic architecture and under South Holland bridges. And how it stood out! Representatives of the shipyard's own creative department and Espen Øino put their heads together to design the exterior. British designer Mark Berryman developed the interior. According to the shipyard, "some radical changes were made to the layout", which shake the foundations of a "traditional yacht".

Crew and guests dine together

The well-being of the crew was also a high priority, resulting in large cabins, a fitness centre and a wellness area. And instead of completely separating the crew and guest quarters, the living spaces - which also include a combined crew mess and dining room - were combined in order to utilise synergies. Up to 22 guests and 33 crew members also travel on the 16 metre wide six-decker in the service of science. This is not a new dual use of an explorer of this size. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who died in 2018, used his 126-metre "Octopus" For 16 years, it was also used for research purposes and the search for historic shipwrecks. US investor Ray Dalio is currently undertaking the 87 metre conversion project "OceanXplorer" underwater expeditions and produces nature films with James Cameron.

Diesel electrics, heat recovery and waste water treatment

On Y722, the hull hatch located amidships on the port side in particular is likely to be used to deploy a submersible or an underwater drone. A total of six hatches adorn the starboard side of the raised steel hull, aft as a terrace for the beach club and forward as a hinged door for the tender fleet. As sensitive areas are on the itinerary, strict efficiency and environmental compatibility requirements must be met. At the heart of the hull designed by Oceanco and Lateral is a diesel-electric drive and a large battery storage system that absorbs peak loads and allows for all-electric journeys. A heat recovery system and an advanced waste water treatment system are installed. Oceanco promises one of the most comfortable yachts in terms of noise and vibration. Certainty will follow when the 111 metres are launched in 2025. Until then, Y.CO and YTMC will supervise the construction.
