Itama returns to the 50 to 59-foot open cruiser segment with the 54. The Italians last revised the Itama 62 in 2023, but have not presented a new model for 15 years.

Itama was quiet for a long time. Even though business was going well and deliveries had been constant since the Ferretti Group took over the helm in 2004. There were plenty of fans of the classic Open lines originally conceived by Marco Casali. The Italians last revised the 62 in 2023 to create the 62RS, which was positioned in the portfolio between the 45RS and the 75-foot flagship. However, there hasn't been a completely new Itama for 15 years. Accordingly, the designers and strategists of the Ferretti Group approached the 16.44 metre long and 4.73 metre wide project with great care. The exterior and interior were designed by Tommaso De Luca, who remained true to the reduced Itama style and the typical negative deck plan with the 54. At the same time, De Luca and the developers of the Ferretti Group deliver aesthetic and functional innovations such as the enlarged side glazing or the sun loungers cleverly integrated into the foredeck.

Clever passage onto the bow

Unlike its predecessors, access to the foredeck is no longer via a door in the centre of the windscreen. The glass is now interrupted on the starboard side for a more comfortable ascent and to allow the hatch to remain open without obstructing the helmsman's view. The dual cockpit with two C-shaped sofas can accommodate up to ten people, who serve themselves at the bar opposite.

Sophisticated main deck with double cockpit

The main deck of the Itama 54 surprises with a completely new layout that combines maximum comfort with well thought-out utilisation of space. The aft area is dominated by a spacious sun deck - a must for an Itama - which is flanked on the port side by a passageway for Roman Catholic boarding. There is a garage under the sunbed, ideal for stowing water toys and equipment. This made it possible to remodel the stern, which also allows the cockpit to be enlarged. However, the real innovation lies in the double cockpit layout, which is divided into two relaxation zones: The two C-shaped sofas, connected by a transverse bench with adjustable backrest, transform into two adjoining outdoor lounges that can accommodate up to ten people.

Innovative room design for maximum comfort

The classic cockpit is complemented by a table, which is also available in an extendable version on request. The real innovation is in the second cockpit, which is located directly behind the windscreen and offers guests a space protected from the wind during the journey. A large bar unit with sink is located on the port side, which Itama can equip with a refrigerator, ice maker and cooker on request. An electrically retractable bimini provides shade at sea and at anchor or protects against approaching showers. In front of the bar, the owner or captain sits on a comfortable double seat at the helm, which features integrated cup holders and a storage compartment. The navigation system is operated via two 12-inch Simrad multifunction displays, which grow to 16 inches in the optional version.

Simple interior that radiates warmth

The windscreen, another characteristic Itama feature, has a more modern design: continuous glass conceals the steel frame, giving the yacht a lighter look. A companionway with six steps leads to the lower deck, which welcomes owners and guests with a galley, TV lounge, two cabins and two bathrooms. Amidships on the port side, a kitchenette with sink, induction hob and a refrigerator at full saloon height welcomes guests. An oven and dishwasher can optionally be added to complete the equipment. An adjoining dinette is suitable for small meals, while hull windows provide natural light. A guest cabin is located to starboard, also amidships, and is available in two configurations: with a double bed (standard) or bunk beds. A private bathroom is always installed, which also serves day guests thanks to a second door to the corridor. The owner's suite with a central king-size bed occupies the foredeck. A multitude of storage compartments and two wardrobes keep things organised here, while the owner's private bathroom is located to starboard. In continuity with the exterior design, the interior is simple and functional, yet radiates warmth and elegance.

Sporty addition to the portfolio

In the basic version, two MAN i6 engines, each with 537 kilowatts of power, accelerate the glider, which displaces just under 20 tonnes, up to 33 knots. Owners who want more can order the almost 200 kilowatt more powerful drive package for a top speed of 38 knots. The tank capacity of 2,500 litres is sufficient for a range of 280 nautical miles at 28 knots - there is no better way to get from Mallorca to Saint-Tropez in ten hours. However, those who opt for an Itama do not do so for practical reasons. Like Riva, the Italian brand is one of the icons of boat building. This is also proven by the second-hand market for these powerful weekenders. It is extremely rare for an example to enrich the portfolios of brokers and then be sold immediately. The brand new Itama 54 fits seamlessly into the coveted portfolio, but can be ordered immediately. Starting price: 1.3 million euros.

Martin Hager

Editor in Chief YACHT

Martin Hager is editor-in-chief of the titles YACHT and BOOTE EXCLUSIV and has been working for Delius Klasing Verlag for 20 years. He was born in Heidelberg in 1978 and started sailing at the age of six, in an Opti of course. This was soon followed by 420s, Sprinta Sport and 470s, which he also sailed on the regatta course with his brother. His parents regularly took him on charter trips through the Greek and Balearic Islands. Even at a young age, it was clear to him that he wanted to turn his passion for water sports into a career. After graduating from high school and completing an internship at the Rathje boatbuilding company in Kiel, it was clear that he did not want to become a classic boatbuilder. Instead, he successfully studied shipbuilding and marine engineering in the Schleswig-Holstein state capital and focused on yacht design wherever he could. His diploma thesis dealt with the “Testing of a new speed prediction method for sailing yachts”. In 2004, the superyacht magazine BOOTE EXCLUSIV was looking for an editor with technical and nautical background knowledge, a position that was perfect for Martin Hager. The application was successful and a two-year traineeship was arranged. After twelve years as an editor, the editorial team changed and he took over responsibility for BOOTE EXCLUSIV as editor-in-chief in 2017. After long-time YACHT editor-in-chief Jochen Rieker moved to the role of publisher, Martin Hager also took over the position of editor-in-chief of Europe's largest sailing magazine YACHT, which is celebrating its 120th anniversary this year, at the beginning of 2023. When he's not working on topics for the two water sports titles, Martin Hager likes to go out on the water himself - preferably with kite and wingfoil equipment or on a little after-work trip across the Alster.
