The Maybach Ocean Club is an exclusive private members club on board a 155 metre yacht liner. Membership opens up access to an extraordinary world at sea - and to a select community of like-minded people who combine inspiration, dialogue and enjoyment. The project combines the luxury brand's design philosophy with maritime experiences.

The Maybach Ocean Club, founded by Splendid Sea AG in collaboration with the legendary Mercedes-Maybach brand, is the world's first private superyacht club. The club offers its members access to a customised yacht liner designed by Dölker + Voges, curated voyages to dream destinations worldwide and a community of like-minded people. Led by an experienced management team, the Maybach Ocean Club aims to become an attractive alternative to owning your own yacht.

The Ocean Club positions itself as a refuge for a select target group that values discretion and special experiences. The initiative is part of the Mercedes-Benz Places strategy, with which the brand is expanding its presence in various areas of life. "Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach are credited with designing one of the first motorboats with an internal combustion engine. This legacy of innovation at sea has informed our design process and inspired us to exceed expectations," said Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Mercedes-Benz.

Concept and orientation of the Maybach Ocean Club

The brand emphasises discretion as a central element and thus appeals to a clientele that values privacy. The experience concept is intended to broaden the senses and horizons without sacrificing the typical Maybach qualities. The combination of design and maritime atmosphere forms the basis. "The club is more than just a ship, its centrepiece is the private circle of friends that grows together through shared experiences on board the yacht, in the water or on joint excursions," adds Captain Matthias Bosse, co-founder and Managing Director. "Whether it's to St Barths or Sardinia, every trip should offer the chance to create lifelong memories and find lasting friendships." Membership of the Maybach Ocean Club is by invitation only and limited to ensure intimacy and privacy.

Integration into the brand strategy

With the Ocean Club, Mercedes-Maybach is systematically expanding its portfolio into new areas. The brand is using its expertise in the luxury segment to establish a presence outside the automotive sector. Mercedes-Benz Places comprises various projects that combine design and lifestyle. The Ocean Club is part of this strategy and opens up the maritime sector. The initiative shows how car manufacturers can transfer their brand identity to other segments.

Martin Hager

Editor in Chief YACHT

Martin Hager is editor-in-chief of the titles YACHT and BOOTE EXCLUSIV and has been working for Delius Klasing Verlag for 20 years. He was born in Heidelberg in 1978 and started sailing at the age of six, in an Opti of course. This was soon followed by 420s, Sprinta Sport and 470s, which he also sailed on the regatta course with his brother. His parents regularly took him on charter trips through the Greek and Balearic Islands. Even at a young age, it was clear to him that he wanted to turn his passion for water sports into a career. After graduating from high school and completing an internship at the Rathje boatbuilding company in Kiel, it was clear that he did not want to become a classic boatbuilder. Instead, he successfully studied shipbuilding and marine engineering in the Schleswig-Holstein state capital and focused on yacht design wherever he could. His diploma thesis dealt with the “Testing of a new speed prediction method for sailing yachts”. In 2004, the superyacht magazine BOOTE EXCLUSIV was looking for an editor with technical and nautical background knowledge, a position that was perfect for Martin Hager. The application was successful and a two-year traineeship was arranged. After twelve years as an editor, the editorial team changed and he took over responsibility for BOOTE EXCLUSIV as editor-in-chief in 2017. After long-time YACHT editor-in-chief Jochen Rieker moved to the role of publisher, Martin Hager also took over the position of editor-in-chief of Europe's largest sailing magazine YACHT, which is celebrating its 120th anniversary this year, at the beginning of 2023. When he's not working on topics for the two water sports titles, Martin Hager likes to go out on the water himself - preferably with kite and wingfoil equipment or on a little after-work trip across the Alster.
