Zeelander Yachts has delivered the most powerful Zeelander 8 ever to leave the shipyard in Groot-Ammers. Four Volvo Penta IPS 1350 engines, with a combined output of 2,942 kilowatts, power the yacht; during sea trials, it reached 40 knots for the first time. The noise level inside the cabin at full throttle is just 65 decibels – equivalent to a normal conversation – making the Zeelander 8 the quietest yacht in its class.
The yacht was built entirely to the client’s specifications in the Netherlands. Sietse Koopmans, founder and chairman of Zeelander Yachts, explains: “The owner came to us after having already lived and worked on a Zeelander 7 for weeks. He knew exactly what he wanted. The result is very personalised and, in our view, one of the best Zeelander 8s we have ever built.”
The experience gained with the Zeelander 7 shaped every decision regarding the construction of its successor. The owner sailed the smaller model on his own, in complete privacy and without a crew. He wanted to replicate this experience on a larger vessel. Joystick docking makes his new pride and joy easy to handle. 24 metres of twists and turns
Koopmans: “For owners who spend their working lives surrounded by people, a crewless yacht is no compromise. No need to coordinate schedules, manage staff or maintain a professional distance. Just the water and freedom. Low-maintenance materials, Volvo IPS propulsion and systems designed for simplicity mean that the Zeelander 8 performs flawlessly in every respect.”
Nevertheless, the yacht offers additional berths for a potential crew. Every Zeelander 8 features a different main-deck layout. For the latest vessel, the brief was clear: the features of the Zeelander 7 that the owner appreciated were to be given more space. The saloon was built around a dining table – a deliberate choice for someone who enjoys entertaining guests. The galley is generously sized and situated right at the heart of the action.
The Zeelander’s characteristic curved sliding window opens the room onto the aft deck. Instead of a bar with stools in the rear corner, the new Zeelander 8 features a large L-shaped bench. Sheltered from the weather, this spot became the owner’s favourite place on his previous yacht.
The interior features one of the most striking materials ever used in a Zeelander. Swamp oak is a type of wood recovered from riverbeds, where it has lain submerged for decades, absorbing minerals and tannins until the wood has turned almost black. It forms the primary surface throughout the yacht.
The material is rare, expensive and impossible to replicate. Combined with exclusive leathers and the “Porsche Agate” colour, the interior takes on a character that no standard wood can match.
A Williams 435 Jet Tender is moored in the side tender bay alongside Seabobs and Flyboards, all stowed inside the hull.
With a hull built to withstand demanding conditions, the latest model can cover 630 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 32 knots; at a speed of seven knots, its range is 2,700 nautical miles. The yacht is built in very limited numbers at the family-run Zeelander shipyard in the Netherlands.
