Juliana Schmidt-Theurer from Visiomare GmbH uses graphics and examples to explain how the systematic search at sea works.
How to communicate and act correctly in an emergency at sea? These topics are the focus of the first of two pilot seminars for instructors on SAR basic training organised by the German Motor Yacht Association (DMYV) in cooperation with the company Visiomare in Bremen. A successful start

The aim of the seminar was to teach recreational boaters the basics of search and rescue (SAR). "And, if necessary, to participate in professionally conducted search procedures in order to improve safety at sea," according to the DMYV press release.

The programme included, among other things: The introduction and relevance of the topic "Assistance at sea", definitions, basics for the SAR service, raising the alarm in an emergency at sea, communication in the SAR service and drift factors as well as search procedures.

Real case studies

Real-life case studies and graphics were used to illustrate the procedures and processes. The pilot event was initially aimed at instructors from sports boat schools and clubs. The aim is to put them in a position to pass on relevant information to applicants for driving licences and radio certificates. They should also be sensitised to the topic.

DMYV plans courses for active water sports enthusiasts

If the pilot events are successful, the DMYV plans to focus on active water sports enthusiasts in the future. These water sports enthusiasts will be able to acquire knowledge in seminars at training centres recognised by the DMYV. These include the professional execution of search procedures for a person who has fallen overboard, effective communication with each other and with the emergency services in an emergency at sea, as well as the factors to be taken into account during the search.

Experienced seminar leader from seafaring and sea rescue

The seminar leader, lecturer and founder of the Visiomare GmbH from Bremen, Juliana Schmidt-Theurer, has a degree in nautical science and has practical experience as a maritime officer at Hapag Lloyd Cruises. From 2017 to 2022, she worked at the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre of the German Maritime Search and Rescue Association (MRCC Bremen/DGzRS). As an instructor at the simulator centre of the DGzRS Maritime Rescue Academy, she worked on the development and implementation of courses and developed training concepts in the field of maritime English for the further training of colleagues in the DGzRS fleet.

Positive feedback from participants

The pilot seminar was rated as very informative by the participants. For Klaus Schlösser, owner and managing director of the DMYV-recognised training centre bootsausbildung.com from Bremen, attending the seminar was a benefit:

For the participants, for example, the search patterns are transformed from abstract sketches into concrete, comprehensible action diagrams that can now be used in an emergency. The goal of making a maritime voyage safer was definitely achieved."

Second DMYV pilot seminar in Cologne in February

Another pilot seminar for instructors at a reduced rate of € 25 per participant will take place on 3 February 2024 from 9 am to 4 pm at the Prime Yachting premises, Aachener Straße 1049 in 50859 Cologne. There are still a few places available. Registration is required by 19 January 2024 by e-mail to the DMYV Training Centre Department at e-mail: ausbildungstaetten@dmyv.de or by fax to 0203-8095856.
