Fresh water tanks can form a biofilm of various microorganisms that can impair the quality of the drinking water. Regular cleaning and disinfection of the tank is therefore important to ensure a safe drinking water supply. We explain the process in four steps

Fresh water tanks, especially if they are a little older, tend to form a so-called biofilm. This consists of a layer of living microorganisms that forms on the surfaces of the inside of the tank. These can be bacteria, fungi, algae and other microorganisms that feed on the nutrients contained in the water. High temperatures favour growth, which can lead to contamination of the drinking water and impair the quality of the water, especially in summer. It is therefore important to clean and disinfect the tank regularly to reduce the growth of biofilm and ensure a safe drinking water supply.

Clean fresh water tank with chemical additives

However, mechanical cleaning of the fresh water tank is difficult or impossible on many boats. This leaves the use of chemical additives. We would like to explain how to carry out this type of disinfection using the example of the "Monera Blue Sailing" product from Chemprox. The disinfectant used is hypochlorous acid, which is also used to disinfect water in swimming pools.

Step 1

The first step is to empty the tank and pipes completely. To do this, open all the taps and drain the tank.

It is then refilled with fresh water. At the same time, the appropriate amount of disinfectant (1.5 litres per 100 litres of water) is added to the incoming water.

Step 3

Now leave this mixture to work for at least one hour and open all tapping points for at least one minute so that the disinfectant is distributed in the pipes. Repeat this process at least three times after a further hour.

Step 4

The tank is then emptied completely and rinsed again with fresh water. In our case, the disinfection worked well and the musty odour and taste of the water disappeared.
