Digital Yacht has unveiled a new AIS transponder. The AIT6000 Nucleus reliably transmits AIS signals and aggregates on-board data from NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 networks. Data such as depth, heading and speed are transmitted via Wi-Fi directly to a smartphone or tablet.

Digital Yacht’s new AIT6000 Nucleus transponder is a true all-rounder. According to the manufacturer, the device combines the functionality of several individual systems: It transmits AIS data at increased transmission power, distributes on-board data via Wi-Fi to up to seven devices, connects NMEA-2000 and NMEA-0183 devices, includes an antenna splitter for VHF and AIS, and offers an anchor alarm and a collision alarm. Another new feature is a satellite function designed to improve the vessel’s visibility during offshore passages. However, this extensive range of functions comes at a price. The transponder costs 1,314 euros.

More reliable AIS transmission

Digital Yacht promises more reliable transmission of AIS data via the Class B+ AIS standard. Rather than simply transmitting AIS data and hoping for a free channel, the AIT6000 actively reserves its transmission slot. In principle, AIS works like a radio system: all vessels transmit their position on the same channels. Standard Class B systems rely on no other device being transmitting at that moment. If the channel is occupied, the transmission is lost.

The AIT6000 operates using the newer Class B+ standard. Each signal already contains information specifying which time slot the device has reserved for its next transmission. The result: position reports should be transmitted more reliably. The transmission power is 5 watts. The transmission interval also adjusts to the vehicle’s speed; thus, transmissions occur more frequently when travelling at higher speeds.

AIS signals beyond 20 nautical miles

Another new feature of the AIT6000 is the ‘SPAIS’ function. Standard AIS operates via VHF: vessels transmit their position on two fixed channels, which are received by coastal stations and other nearby vessels. Beyond 20 nautical miles, the vessel is still visible to other nearby boats, but is usually out of range of control centres and tracking services. According to Digital Yacht, the AIT6000 with ‘SPAIS’ transmits an additional message designed to make reception by AIS satellites more reliable. This ensures that the vessel remains trackable by emergency services even during offshore voyages.

Integrated VHF splitter

Anyone wishing to use AIS and VHF on a single antenna will need a splitter, which can result in signal loss. The AIT6000 features a patented VHF antenna splitter designed to operate without any signal loss. The transponder takes the signal from the main antenna and distributes it to the VHF radio and, if available, to an FM or DAB radio. This means a second antenna cable is no longer required.

NMEA-2000 gateway and Wi-Fi hub

The Wi-Fi interface not only transmits AIS and GPS data, but also instrument data from the NMEA 2000 network: depth, heading and speed are thus transmitted directly to the end device. Data can also be sent back from an app to on-board devices, such as the autopilot.

According to Digital Yacht, the AIT6000 is compatible with many popular iOS and Android apps such as Navionics, Savvy Navvy, TZ iBoat, AquaMap and OpenCPN, as well as with navigation software for PC, Mac and Linux. An NMEA-0183 output is also included for older chartplotters.

Alerts and configuration via a web browser

The AIT6000 also features an anchor watch and a collision alarm. The anchor watch calculates the optimum drift radius based on water depth and chain length. Alerts are displayed on connected mobile devices via the web interface. The alarms can be forwarded via NMEA 2000 to a chartplotter or to Digital Yachts NavAlarm.

The transponder is set up and operated via an integrated web interface, which can be accessed in a browser via the AIT6000’s on-board Wi-Fi, without the need for an app or an internet connection. This interface allows you to manage the MMSI, Wi-Fi settings, alarm thresholds and the AIS mute function.
