The Yangwang U8 has four electric motors with a total output of over 1100 hp (809 kW). This motorisation enables acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. In terms of performance, this puts the SUV in the realm of super sports cars. An additional combustion engine serves as a range extender, which recharges the battery when required. BYD claims an enormous range of 1000 kilometres. This, combined with the maximum towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes, makes the U8 a real alternative to the combustion engine, even for trailer captains.
However, the special feature of the Yangwang U8 is its ability to swim in water. According to the manufacturer, the SUV can drive for up to 30 minutes in 1.40 metres of water. It can reach a speed of 3 km/h. To activate this function, the U8 offers a special "yachting mode". In this mode, the body is raised to its maximum height, the combustion engine is deactivated, the ventilation is set to recirculated air and the sunroof is opened - as an emergency exit in case the water is too deep and the vehicle sinks. So if something goes wrong during the slip process, you don't have to worry about sinking the car. However, initial driving videos show that the slightly top-heavy floating position could still be improved.
Another special technical feature of the Yangwang U8 is its ability to turn on the spot. Thanks to the four independently controllable electric motors, the SUV can rotate the wheels in opposite directions and thus achieve a turning circle of zero metres. This function should be particularly advantageous in narrow off-road passages or in the city.
BYD (Build Your Dreams) was founded in 1995 and has developed from a battery manufacturer into one of China's largest car producers. The company is particularly well known for its electric vehicles and is increasingly expanding into international markets. With the Yangwang brand, BYD is targeting the premium segment.
