On large yachts, anchoring is a routine manoeuvre, especially as the anchor is usually already "in place" in the bow fitting and the chain is "clear to" in the anchor locker. Small boat skippers have to do a lot more before the hook goes to the bottom.
The anchor locker, if there is one at all, is very small and you will look in vain for helpful details such as an anchor windlass, bow roller and rocker on smaller units.
This is often the reason why many pleasure craft generously dispense with an anchoring harness altogether, even though this is an important part of the safety equipment.
Only a good anchor will keep the boat in position if it is forced to maintain a fixed position (outside the fairway) due to engine failure or sudden fog, for example.
Almost all skippers are aware of the safety aspects of an anchor harness. Those who nevertheless do without it are usually acting out of sheer lack of space.
