DMYV President Frank Dettmering led by example and had the fuel tanks of his motor yacht “Independence” (Linssen 47 AC, built in 2006) professionally inspected and cleaned. The inspection confirmed a severe infestation of so-called ‘diesel pest’ – a bio-sludge caused by micro-organisms that can damage filters, pipes and even fuel tanks. This is caused by water content in the fuel, exacerbated by the addition of biodiesel and long periods of inactivity.
The issue is becoming increasingly relevant as a result of its growing use alternative fuels such as HVO or GTL diesel. These can dislodge existing deposits, which may compromise the fuel system. It is therefore recommended that the fuel tank be cleaned beforehand.
Mikrofiltertechnik GmbH uses specialised mobile equipment for inspection and cleaning, including camera systems and retrofittable service hatches for tanks that are difficult to access. In the case of the “Independence”, the accumulated bio-sludge was completely removed within a few hours and maintainability was improved.
The ‘Clean Tank’ campaign starts in September and is aimed at members of DMYV-Clubs. A 10 per cent discount on cleaning services is on offer. This is generally subject to at least three boats taking part at each location, as the work is carried out directly in the clubs’ marinas. Clubs can register their interest using the relevant form, which can be found at dmyv.de/downloads in the ‘For Clubs’ section. Mikrofiltertechnik GmbH is responsible for scheduling and coordination.
