The British galley supplier GN Espace With the Alize Gastro Grill, the company is introducing an electric cooking appliance that has been specially developed for use on yacht decks. The IPX5 protection rating means that the appliance can withstand water jets from all directions. This means it can be used both at anchor and whilst underway. This certification sets the Alize apart from conventional electric grills, which are designed for domestic use and lack the necessary waterproofing to prevent water ingress.
The housing is made of 316 stainless steel, also known as V4A. This material contains molybdenum, making it particularly resistant to salt water and corrosion. The manufacturer supplies the unit with a cable and plug compliant with protection class IP67. This rating indicates complete protection against dust and protection against temporary submersion. The design does not use gas as an energy source, meaning that no gas cylinders need to be stored on board.
The barbecue operates at a power rating of 2 kilowatts at 230 volts AC. The temperature can be adjusted continuously, from low settings for keeping food warm to high temperatures for searing. A residual current device (RCD) is built in. This automatically cuts off the power supply if a residual current is detected, for example due to damaged wiring or moisture in the system.
A removable GN 1/1-sized grill plate serves as the cooking surface. This standardised size measures 530 by 325 millimetres and is used in the catering industry worldwide. The plate is made of cast aluminium. After grilling, it can be removed and washed in the galley sink. According to GN Espace, this is a response to customer surveys in which cleaning was cited as the biggest problem when grilling. The use of the Gastronorm standard makes it possible to use the same containers both on deck and in the galley.
The Alize is supplied as standard for tabletop use. As optional extras, GN Espace offers mounting on the rear basket or pedestal mounting. With the pedestal version, the barbecue stands on its own base. The manufacturer states that various accessories are available, but does not provide any specific details regarding their type or range.
The barbecue is designed to be suitable for a variety of cooking tasks, from breakfast and family meals to preparing fresh ingredients in the evening. The electric heating system produces no open flame and no exhaust fumes. As a result, it produces less odour than gas or charcoal barbecues. Heat is available immediately after switching on, with no preheating time required for burners or embers.
