Bauhaus also offers its Pegazus 450 as a kit. Anyone who wants to can use it to build their own boat. The BOOTE workshop shows how it's done

In this special:

Basic or ready to go ? Those who prefer simple solutions will undoubtedly opt for the basic version of the Pegazus 450, powered by a licence-free 15 hp outboard motor. Attach the engine, fill the engine manufacturer's portable 12-litre tank and hoist it on board, give the starter rope a good tug and off you go. However, the engine, which costs around 3200 euros in this performance class, is not part of the inexpensive (4499 euros) basic package.

Conclusion: With an engine, but without "bells and whistles", the GRP Pegazus 450 is the perfect fishing boat. There is another way.

Console boat with everything that goes with it

If you like it a little more comfortable and sporty and opt for the ready-to-go version when buying, you will have to dig a lot deeper into your pocket for your entry into motorised water sports. For 14,995 euros, however, you get the full programme. This means: a steering position with windscreen, handrail and mechanical steering, stern and bow railing with integrated cleats and a Tohatsu MFS 50 in long shaft version, which is expertly installed by Bauhaus technicians with everything that goes with it - including single lever gearstick, instrumentation, quick stop, starter battery and a portable 25-litre tank with fuel gauge.

The kit we bought, which includes the basic shell, helmstand, railing, anchor roller, bathing ladder and sunbed package with storage boxes and a complete set of cushions, is cheaper. This means that if you want to do it yourself, you can save a lot of money. In any case, the basis is a 4.40 m long and 1.95 m wide hull with a self-draining cockpit, which weighs 280 kg "empty". The manufacturer specifies a payload of 520 kg.

Trailer and the permissible trailer load must be correct

The Polish boat builders equip the Pegazus 450 with a stable transom, the height of which is designed for long-shaft engines with a maximum of 50 hp, and certify it for CE design category C. For those who don't know what that means: The examiners of the "Notified Bodies" (the notified bodies of the European Union) thus certify the Pegazus 450 as having properties that enable it to master sailing in inland areas and coastal waters where wind forces of up to 6 Beaufort and 2 m high waves can occur.

Dimensions and weight ensure that there are no problems when "going ashore". It is important that the trailer and the permissible towing capacity of the towing vehicle match the weight of the "ready-to-trip" boat.

The first impression counts

First impressions are also important for the screwdrivers at the BOOTE workshop. What's inside the packaging? You take a close look and are amazed. In the editor-in-chief's own words: "It's not just a piece of rubbish, it's all well thought out." In other words, it's well thought out and makes sense. We can attest to the excellent workmanship of the "Basic". The laminate made of glass fibre mats and polyester resin is also coated with a gelcoat on the inside and carefully rounded off at the interfaces. Sharp edges? Not a thing. The fittings are solid, extensively underlaid and perfectly sealed. Where stainless steel is required, stainless steel is used. Of course, nothing is worse than rust. Perhaps a fiddly scuff plate? No, the Pegazus 450 has a robust PVC profile.

Once all the packages have been unpacked and inspected, it is clear that first-class quality and completeness are also a top priority for the "kit". The question remains: What do the hobby boat builders need to bring with them? A little DIY talent and experience would be good. Of course, you can't do it without any tools at all. A drill, drill set, screwdriver, spanner, silicone syringe (cartridge gun), gloves, folding rule or tape measure and a pencil are a must. The most important tool is supplied by the seller. In the assembly instructions, each work step is described in detail and clearly in German. There are photos and sketches in which all the important measurements are documented. Now we can get started. We start with the assembly of the steering position.
