Practical pocket-sized jump starters have been available for some years now. Can they get your boat afloat again? We put them to the test

Ignition key turned - and apart from a tired click of the starter motor, nothing happens. Then the starter battery is usually flat. In the past, we had to lug a second heavy lead-acid battery on board to get the engine going; today there are alternatives. One particularly small jump starter is the Jump Starter Pow All 18000 (sales and dealer details here ). During our test start he brought Honda's 50 hp outboard engine to turn and start easily. The pack was also able to cure a 2-litre diesel (75 hp) of its initial "drive weakness". However, after a start attempt with pre-glow, a break is required, as the module should not be subjected to high currents for longer than about 10 seconds. Particularly practical: the outputs for 12 V and USB devices (charging sockets) and the case included in the jump-start kit (see picture). Price: 159 euros.
