Lighting on board plays a key role at night or in poor visibility. The US company Yacht Beam LED has now developed a new series of modern LED searchlights for maritime use. The additional functions in particular can be helpful.

The Performance Series Searchlights (models SRS 1000 and SRS 2000) are designed to ensure greater visibility and safety on boats. No matter whether travelling at night, mooring or in an emergency. The new searchlights combine two light modes: spot and flood. In spot mode, the light is bundled into a narrow, powerful beam which, according to the manufacturer, reaches up to around 2.5 kilometres. Flood mode, on the other hand, provides wide, even illumination of the immediate surroundings. This is practical when manoeuvring in the harbour, working on deck or when you simply need a better overview.

Yacht Beam LED has also been upgraded in terms of technology. The housings are made of marine-grade cast aluminium, are protected against dust and splash water to IP65 and can therefore withstand salty spray and continuous use. A temperature control system ensures that the LEDs do not overheat and automatically reduces the output if necessary.

Smart headlight control and greater safety

The searchlights are controlled via a joystick, which offers several rotation speeds and allows full 360-degree rotation. The height of the light cone can also be adjusted - by up to 15 degrees upwards and 27 degrees downwards. If you like, you can also have the spotlight automatically swivel across the water in "sweep mode" to continuously scan the surroundings.

One clever detail is the auto-home system: after use, the headlamp automatically rotates to a protected starting position so that wind, salt and sun have less of an impact on it.

In addition to the classic lighting function, the new models also come with a few interesting extras. These include an SOS mode, which emits an international distress signal, and a strobe light that can be used as a warning or deterrent in critical situations. With a colour temperature of around 6000 Kelvin, the LEDs provide a bright white, daylight-like light that makes contrasts on the surface of the water clearly visible.

Modern LED technology on the water

The two variants differ primarily in terms of power: the SRS 1000 operates at around 140 watts, the larger SRS 2000 at 240 watts. Both models can be operated on vehicle electrical systems with 12 to 24 volts.

The new Yacht Beam LED spotlights are an impressive demonstration of how far LED technology has come in the maritime sector. What used to consume enormous amounts of energy with halogen or xenon now works more efficiently, has a longer service life and is more controllable - all in much more compact housings.

The floodlights are primarily intended for yacht and boat operation, but they could just as easily be used on rescue boats, research vessels or in coastal surveillance, wherever you don't want to do without light and visibility.

From his grandfather's self-built wooden opti and a Europe to a 49er and an X362 Sport, there was a lot to choose from. After leaving school, Puls decided to train as a boat builder at the high-tech shipyard Knierim Yachtbau in Kiel in 2016. He successfully completed his training in 2020 and stayed at the shipyard as a bachelor. In 2022, he decided not only to build boats, but also to test them. Since then, he has been working for Delius Klasing Verlag in the Test & Technology section of BOOTE magazine. The training he received and the eye for detail and quality of workmanship he acquired help him immensely today. Even though he is a regatta sailor with heart and soul, he feels right at home on motorboats and enjoys separating his professional and private lives and yet combining them. Because we all know one thing: there is simply no better place to be than on the water.
