The new Active Target 2 XL transducer.
Lowrance is expanding its live sonar system with the ActiveTarget 2 XL. The new transducer displays a 180-degree range in real time and switches between forward and downward views at the touch of a button.

The ActiveTarget 2 XL adds a larger transducer with an extended field of view to the existing Lowrance system. While the normal ActiveTarget 2 already provides real-time sonar images, the XL version now covers a range of 180 degrees. The transducer works with the existing ActiveTarget 2 sonar module, so anglers only need the new transducer as an upgrade.

Switching without manual adjustment

The XL transducer shows either the forward view (Forward XL) or the downward view (Down XL). You can switch between the two modes directly on the chartplotter display. The transducer does not need to be adjusted mechanically; an additional bracket is required for the scout view, i.e. the overview from above. This bracket fits both shaft mounts and motorised mounts and has built-in reference markings. These markings help to set the optimum angle for deep or shallow water.

Compatibility with existing systems

The ActiveTarget 2 XL works with the Lowrance chartplotters HDS PRO, HDS Live, HDS Carbon and Elite FS. If you already own an ActiveTarget 2 sonar module, you can connect the XL transducer directly. Installation requires no additional hardware other than the transducer and the appropriate bracket. The transducer uses the same cabling and power supply as the standard ActiveTarget 2 system.

360-degree view with two systems

Anglers who combine two ActiveTarget 2 XL systems receive a complete 360-degree all-round view in scout mode. However, this function is only available with the HDS PRO and requires two separate sonar modules and two XL transducers. With this configuration, the Forward XL, Down XL and Scout XL views can be displayed simultaneously. The trolling motor no longer needs to be lifted out of the water to change position.

Technical equipment

The XL transducer works with a higher resolution than the previous model and, according to the manufacturer, shows more detailed images of fish and underwater structures. The system has optimised image stabilisation, which is said to deliver clear images even in waves. The beam width has been extended compared to the standard ActiveTarget 2, allowing objects to be captured at a greater distance from the boat. The image refresh rate enables a fluid display of the underwater situation in real time.

Mounting options

Lowrance offers various mounts. The shaft mount enables vertical mounting for forward and downward views. For the scout view, there is a special shaft mount that aligns the transducer horizontally. A motor mount is only available for Recon trolling motors. The Scout Wide mount for the extended all-round view must be purchased separately.

From his grandfather's self-built wooden opti and a Europe to a 49er and an X362 Sport, there was a lot to choose from. After leaving school, Puls decided to train as a boat builder at the high-tech shipyard Knierim Yachtbau in Kiel in 2016. He successfully completed his training in 2020 and stayed at the shipyard as a bachelor. In 2022, he decided not only to build boats, but also to test them. Since then, he has been working for Delius Klasing Verlag in the Test & Technology section of BOOTE magazine. The training he received and the eye for detail and quality of workmanship he acquired help him immensely today. Even though he is a regatta sailor with heart and soul, he feels right at home on motorboats and enjoys separating his professional and private lives and yet combining them. Because we all know one thing: there is simply no better place to be than on the water.
