The German Motor Yacht Association (DMYV) is selling the original furniture from the former Thyssen villa in Duisburg. The building, which was built in 1953 as a guest house for Thyssen Stahl AG, has served as the association's office for 30 years. Now the ageing rooms are to be modernised. The proceeds from the sale of the furniture will go towards the DMYV's charitable work.

In 1994, the Deutscher Motoryachtverband e.V. acquired the building on the Vinckeufer opposite the container harbour as its head office. After all this time, a thorough renovation and modernisation of the building was inevitable. After the offices, it is now the turn of the large conference room, the centrepiece of the villa. In the 1950s and 1960s, it was not only steel bosses and business leaders from Thyssen AG who held conferences here, but also nobility and celebrities from business and politics. Even the British Queen Elizabeth II is said to have taken a short break and had lunch here during her state visit to Duisburg in 1965.

Conference room to be modernised

The conference room's furnishings are more reminiscent of a museum than a modern conference room and no longer meet the requirements of the Federal Association for Motorised Water Sports' administration and office. The furniture is to be replaced by a contemporary, flexible furnishing concept. However, it is clear that the high-quality original furniture should not be thrown away in a container. That is why we are now looking for enthusiasts who recognise and appreciate the charm and value of the high-quality furnishings from the early 1950s. The proceeds from the sale will be donated to a charitable cause within the association's work.

You can find out which properties are for sale and when you can view them on the website of the DMYV

Jill Grigoleit was born in Hanover in 1985. An early childhood memory is the large collection of YACHT and SURF magazines from her sailing and surfing enthusiast father. However, growing up in a small Swabian village on the Neckar, she had less to do with water sports in her childhood, apart from a few trips to the Baltic Sea with her family. After studying journalism in Bremen and Hanover, she went into television for a few years. Through a few lucky coincidences, she ended up on the water in 2011 and then returned to the written word professionally. For over ten years, she lived with her family on a houseboat in their own harbor south of Hamburg and wrote a book about houseboat building and life with children on the water. Since 2020, she has mainly been writing travel reports and features about people who live and work on and near the water for BOOTE. She has been a permanent member of the Delius Klasing water sports editorial team since January 2024.
