The finish line of the Club Yachting Life regatta could not have been set more spectacularly by the committee of the Club Maritimo de Mahon. Directly in front of the jetties of Marina Mahon, the starters of the race sailed across the line in winds of up to 25 knots from the south-west, travelling at up to twelve knots and heeling considerably, only to be celebrated by the Dahm International team on the jetties five minutes later.
Even Romke Loopik, the experienced captain of the 42-metre ketch "Passe Partout", admitted at the finish line that his heart was beating at an unusually high rate during the powered-up finish. "'Passe Partout', with her 260 tonnes of displacement, is not easy to bring to a halt quickly. Especially when she's really moving and there's hardly any room to manoeuvre, like here behind the finish line," said the likeable Dutchman on the jetty.
Even though all the yachts fought ambitiously to win the race in fantastic weather, the 130 participants in the 25th Club Yachting Life event were not just aiming for a place on the winners' podium. "The fun of sailing and spending evenings together is always at the centre of our event," says Dahm International boss Herbert Dahm.
