Capri is well on its way to becoming a new attraction for the big-boat sailing community. With the help of sponsor Rolex, a converted harbour and unprecedented organisational qualities, the Rolex Volcano Race, held for the second time at Whitsun, proved to be a regatta highlight. 15 maxi racers from 13 nations travelled to the event, including a new Russian Swan 60 sponsored by Gazprom.

The regatta series began off the 2600-year-old port city of Gaeta, 90 kilometres north of Naples, with a successful, short opening regatta, organisational support from the feared Guardia di Finanza and a navy concert. This was followed by a 100-nautical-mile night regatta around the island of Ponza to Capri.
