Webinar on 2 February & 9 February: Collision-avoidance rules in practice

With fewer than 20 rules on right of way and manoeuvring, the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) govern all maritime traffic worldwide – whilst taking into account a wide variety of situations. Every skipper should be familiar with these globally applicable traffic regulations, as they form the cornerstone of correct conduct at sea. In these webinars, we translate the text of the rules into practical terms: the focus is not on formal legal treatises, but on correctly assessing traffic situations and behaving safely and in accordance with the rules in each individual case.

Webinar content:

The first part is entitled ‘Recognising hazards and taking the right action’. It focuses on the basic rules of conduct in maritime traffic. Particularly in situations that cannot be resolved by a single specific rule, these rules provide the decisive guidelines. We also address the frequently discussed discrepancy between theory and practice when it comes to giving way in accordance with the KVR. And we explain why, under the KVR, there is no right of way and what this means in practice.

Among other things, the following topics are covered and explained using practical examples:

  • Where do the KVR apply?
  • Who are the KVR applicable to?
  • What are the KVR’s basic requirements for all road users?
  • How can I recognise an imminent risk of collision?
  • How do I assess the situation correctly?
  • When is action required?
  • What are the key features of a safe evasive manoeuvre?
  • As the party required to give way, how should I act?
  • When must or may the market maker take action?

We also recommend Part 2, which discusses specific situations where people meet:

The second part of our webinar series on the International Collision Prevention Rules (KVR) focuses on specific manoeuvring scenarios. How are the roles of the vessels allocated amongst themselves, and what factors determine this in each individual case? What is the order of priority amongst the different categories of vessel, and how do vessels of the same category give way to one another? And what is the significance of the rule against obstructing other vessels, which applies to certain types of vessel and in certain waters?

Under the heading ‘Assessing traffic situations and determining roles’, various scenarios are acted out and discussed. And, as in the first part, the focus is on applying the KVR to on-board practice. As the basic rules of the KVR for correct behaviour in traffic must always be borne in mind, we recommend booking both parts – although this is not strictly necessary.

Among other things, the following topics are covered and explained using practical examples:

  • Which rules on giving way apply in which situations?
  • Who has to give way to whom, and why?
  • Which vehicle categories does the KVR recognise?
  • How is the order of priority between the different vehicle categories determined?
  • How do motorised vehicles give way to one another?
  • How do sailors give way to one another?
  • What is the principle of non-discrimination all about?
  • What special rules apply in narrow waterways and traffic separation zones?
  • What should you do if visibility is reduced?

The webinars are aimed at both beginners and experienced skippers who wish to deepen or refresh their knowledge of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
