Knot-tying – no prior knowledge is required, but those who already know how to tie a clove hitch and a bowline will find it a little easier. Please have two pieces of rope, each 1–2 metres long, to hand so that you can practise the knots and applications shown in real time: The bowline, clove hitch, loop knot, thickening knot, safety knot, lashing knot and many more will be demonstrated and explained on board, with reference to their specific uses.
Knots and lashings – How to tie a knot that holds securely and looks perfect. Have some rigging twine and a suitable sewing needle to hand. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you’re all set.
The eye splice in twisted rope rounds off your knowledge and is part of the repertoire of any competent skipper, enabling them to fit mooring lines, fender lines, buoy straps and the like with neat eyes or thimbles. Have a short, three-strand braided line to hand so you can join in straight away.
Whether you’re a sailor or a motorboat enthusiast, a skipper or an experienced crew member, everyone will benefit – even in everyday life – from knowing how to use knots and lines skilfully and having a good understanding of ropes.
