A stolen motor yacht triggered a chase lasting around half an hour off the Balearic Islands last Sunday. According to the “Mallorca Zeitung” and “Mallorca Magazin”, the boat, worth more than one million euros, was stolen from Port de Sóller. It reportedly belonged to a charter company.

The Guardia Civil had been informed of the theft on Sunday morning. Working with the company concerned, the investigators were able to pinpoint the yacht’s location. At that time, a man and a woman were on board. The boat was heading towards Ibiza.

The Guardia Civil deployed a helicopter and two boats to search for and pursue the vessel. The emergency services eventually spotted the motor yacht near the small island of Tagomago, off the coast of Ibiza. The skipper was ordered several times to switch off the engines. According to the “Mallorca Zeitung”, he ignored the instructions. He is also said to have carried out several manoeuvres in an attempt to ram the patrol boats.

A video released by the Guardia Civil shows the emergency services in pursuit both on the water and from the air. It was only after about 30 minutes that the man gave up and stopped the boat. The Guardia Civil arrested the 52-year-old. He is under investigation on suspicion of theft, a possible assault on police officers and for failing to comply with police orders.
