For more than two years now, the German Motor Yacht Association on course for modernisation. The stages on this journey are necessary, contemporary changes at all levels. The association must - as its management bodies and above all President Frank Dettmering are aware - reposition itself for the future and meet the younger generations - the basis for its continued existence - where they are. The association opened itself up to all types of motorised water sports, which it has emphasised since February 2022 by adding the words "Federal Association for Motorised Water Sports" to its logo. Examples of this include the inclusion of the German Jet Sports Association, the MotoSurf Club Germany and the Hover Club of Germany, all three of which are registered associations.
Digitalisation is at least as important. It is not only reflected in the successful relaunch of the German Motor Yacht Association and its affiliated Recreational Craft Association (SBV) but also in the modern presentation of the accountability report at the most recent Association meeting in Lutherstadt Wittenberg in May 2023. Instead of a lengthy lecture, Frank Dettmering let the pictures speak for themselves, which can be found on the DMYV's YouTube channel: A 13-minute video with the title "DMYV - Showcase of the last legislative period for the 2023 Association Congress". It provides an impressive overview of the association's key successes, events and projects in 2021 and 2022.
A milestone on the road to digitalisation is the DMYV app for all skippers, which the DMYV has developed in collaboration with the software company Up2Boat from Brühl. Functions such as the electronic reservation of moorings, a digital logbook and, of course, technical tips, weather information and much more make the app a multi-tool for communication, information and services relating to boats. It is also intended to serve as a digital membership card for members of DMYV and SBV clubs and digitise and simplify processes on the water, such as proof that lock fees have been paid.
The app was actually supposed to go live for the 2023 season, but the need for additional functions and fine-tuning crystallised during the test phase. On 20 September, the DMYV announced that its eagerly awaited app will go live at boot Düsseldorf in January 2024 and will be presented to the public there.
Up2Boat Managing Director Andreas Haberer: "Throughout the season and especially at the skippers' meeting in Dausenau, we had many discussions with skippers on the subject of apps for boaters. We received valuable tips and suggestions that are worth looking into. Nothing is more important to us in a development like this than finding out what the customer really needs in order to develop solutions that exceed their expectations."
DMYV President Frank Dettmering adds: "The app should be an application by skippers for skippers! This aspect is very important to us. That's why we want to incorporate the skippers' ideas. In view of the fact that the boating season is now drawing to a close, we have therefore decided to examine these suggestions at our leisure and wait until boot 2024 before the official launch. We also have a great platform there to get direct feedback from the skippers and, if necessary, we can fine-tune the details before the start of the season."
Even though the app will only be launched at boot Düsseldorf, both the DMYV and Up2Boat will be represented at Interboot, the international water sports exhibition in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, from 23 September to 1 October - both in Hall A4. The "home harbour" of the DMYV is at stand A4-214, the coordinates of Up2Boat are A4-107. Delius Klasing Publishing House with the magazines "boats" and "Yacht" sets up its Interboot base camp in the same hall, stand A4-403.
The German Motor Yacht Association is the umbrella organisation for motorised water sports. The association's most important tasks include representing the interests of motorised water sports at all levels and promoting all facets of motorboat and yacht sports.
Water sports interests are represented by the Executive Committee, the departments, the Association Council and the boards of the regional associations and clubs. The members in the clubs and regional associations are the main pillars of the association. The DMYV has around 500 member clubs with several thousand individual members who belong to the respective regional associations.
As the organisation responsible for national sporting sovereignty, the DMYV supports and promotes competitive sport. As a result, doping and the misuse of drugs are combated and penalised. The DMYV is a member of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) and the European Boating Association (EBA). With regard to the promotion of sport, the association is a non-profit organisation.
At the Duisburg office, 19 employees handle the administration and the driving licence system as defined by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV).
The Sport Boat Association (SBV) e.V. With 5,000 members, the German Motor Yacht Association is the largest association in Germany affiliated to the DMYV - the umbrella organisation for motorised water sports. It is open to water sports enthusiasts - with or without a boat - throughout Europe.
"The SBV has set itself the goal of offering boaters who do not belong to a club advice and assistance in matters relating to their sport and allowing them to participate in the further development of tourism, technology and sport. The association does not want to compete with the member clubs of the German Motor Yacht Association. Rather, it is aimed at those circles who are not primarily interested in club life, but who nevertheless want to distinguish themselves favourably from boaters who are not yet members by their behaviour on the water and in public on the basis of their knowledge in technical, sporting and tourist areas and by observing the general rules of good seamanship," the DMYV portrays the SBV in a press release.
